Crystal Commanders Best RTS Games

Posted on: 17 May 2025

Real-time strategy (RTS) games are a staple on PC thanks to its mouse and keyboard combo offering a wealth of control. Thankfully, developers have found new, immersive ways to bring this tactile genre to VR headsets. So if you love the methodical gameplay that these types of titles offer, here are the best VR RTS games for Meta Quest.

The Best VR RTS Games

All of these particular RTS games can be found directly on the Horizon Store. While you can hook your Quest up to a PC to access more of this style of game, XRSource is only focusing on those most easily accessible to all Quest owners.

So, in no particular order, here are (what we consider) the best VR RTS games you can buy for Quest.

Crystal Commanders

When you think of classic RTS games, what comes to mind? Probably games like Command and Conquer or Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2, most probably. Aiming to hit those high notes is Crystal Commanders from DB Creations. Offering a colourful take on RTS gaming, in Crystal Commanders, you can build bases and troops to fight AI enemies in the campaign and skirmish modes. Or take on a real threat in the multiplayer mode.

What makes Crystal Commanders stand out is its use of VR and mixed reality modes. The game can be played entirely in VR with virtual environments. Switching to MR allows for a more vertical battlefield, with buildings able to be placed on furniture! It makes for a very dynamic experience.

Townsmen VR is Coming to PSVR2

Townsmen VR

For those who prefer a slightly more strategic city builder, there’s Townsmen VR. With its medieval aesthetic, Townsmen VR is all about growing a humble settlement into a far grander one. Set across 13 diverse islands and archipelagos, with 20 upgradable buildings to unlock, you’ll need to fill it with builders, farmers, hunters, and soldiers to ensure success.

The gameplay is very hands-on, picking up townsfolk and structures to place them exactly where you want. They’ll need to be assigned tasks to make the local economy flourish, carefully optimising aspects like transport routes so they don’t go hungry or broke. It’s not an entirely tranquil setting, however. Raiders will attack your village, so making sure defences are in place is crucial. This is one of those great Sunday afternoon games.

Vestiges Fallen Tribes - Best VR RTS Games

Vestiges: Fallen Tribes

From the team that brought us the excellent Ragnarock comes a very different type of game: Vestiges: Fallen Tribes. This is a real-time strategy game built around battling cards. There’s a grand story campaign revolving around two warring factions that have chosen to do battle, boardgame-style, rather than sending soldiers off to die. On one arm, you have a selection of cards denoting various troops and their abilities. These are then placed on the battlefield, and once you’re happy with the selection, the battle commences!

You don’t have direct control – you activate an autobattler sequence – which means you get to watch and wait to see what the outcome is. This makes for a tense and rewarding experience as you learn where (and when) best to place certain troops to ensure victory.

Best VR Multiplayer Games- Demeo

Demeo

There’s not much to say about Demeo that hasn’t already been said, it is one of XRSource’s favourite strategy games. A tabletop dungeon crawler from Resolution Games, Demeo is entirely turn-based. Select from one of a number of different character classes, including Archer or Wizard, before exploring enemy-filled dungeons by yourself or with several friends.

Surviving the corridors and hallways of these dungeons to reach the final boss is no easy task. Characters are picked up and moved around, with battles won and lost on the roll of a die. Providing a social experience alongside the five campaign adventures, there’s good reason as to why Quest owners love Demeo.

Skyworld Kingdom Brawl - Best VR RTS Games

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

In a similar vein to Vestiges, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl is another card battler. Released several years ago now, and with a very cartoony vibe, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl still holds up fairly well, offering over 20 unique battle arenas and dozens of card options to deploy troops and cast spells. It was one of the earliest games to offer this style of gameplay.

While it does offer single-player and multiplayer modes, consider the game only if you’re interested in the solo gameplay. Developer Verigo Games has confirmed that the coop / multiplayer modes will no longer be available after 1st July 2025.

BattleGroupVR - Best VR RTS Games

BattleGroupVR

Time for something a little different as we head into space! For those after a heavy sci-fi vibe, looking to do battle across the stars, look no further than BattleGroupVR. It might not have the best name, but we won’t hold that against it. One of the few intergalactic RTS games available, BattleGroupVR puts you in charge of a fleet of battleships.

As the commander stood upon the bridge of your own flagship, it’s up to you to instruct your captains and their warships into battle. Offering single-player, co-op and multiplayer modes, unlock a multitude of new ships with special abilities, load-outs, and configurations to deploy. If you love franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, BattleGroupVR is worth checking out.

Shoguns Empire - Best VR RTS Games

Shogun’s Empire

Here’s one for all you RISK lovers out there. Set in medieval Japan, Shogun’s Empire is a single-player strategy game featuring dozens of campaigns built around 15 historical clans. To expand your empire, you need to make alliances, recruit well-trained samurai and when needed, declare wars on your enemies.

As any good commander knows, war isn’t purely about winning a decisive battle. You need to build a strong economy and provide food for your troops, upgrading your soldiers, cavalry and artillery to build an unstoppable army. Shogun’s Empire provides a deep strategy element whereby each playthrough can be approached completely differently depending on your play style. Prepare to spend many hours in VR with this one.
