With a plethora of virtual worlds to explore, it can be difficult deciding which one to devote your precious time to. Finding the right mix of storyline, character building and combat mechanics can be tricky. So XR Source has taken that away with our selection of the best VR RPG games available.
The Best VR RPG Games
When it comes to VR RPGs big always tends to be better. You want expansive adventures where you can jump on a horse and ride into the sunset, taking out a few undesirables along the way. Or swap the horse for a dragon and a gun for a magic wand. You should be able to do all that and more.
Below you’ll find titles (in no particular order) highlighting VR RPGs from across the board. Playable across a variety of VR headsets including PC VR, PSVR/PSVR 2 and Meta Quest 2.
The Mage’s Tale
From RPG specialists inXile Entertainment (Wasteland series and The Bard’s Tale) came The Mage’s Tale in 2018. Even five years later it holds up well, where you become the titular mage in a fantasy adventure.
You play an apprentice of the mystic arts who must rescue his master from a corrupt wizard. That means exploring dungeons, learning plenty of new spells and dealing with all sorts of monsters. Unleash fire and lightning from your fingertips whilst avoiding traps and solving a few devious puzzles on route.
Demeo
Resolution Games’ Demeo might be a turn-based tabletop strategy game but it’s still a great RPG. This is a dungeon crawler where you can battle alone or cooperate with 3 friends to fight through monstrous enemies to defeat an evil boss.
Choose from one of several character classes like Archer or Wizard, and then pick from one of five adventures. Characters can be physically picked up and moved around, and when engaged in combat you roll a virtual die to determine the outcome. Each has its own particular strengths and weaknesses with loads of strategies to experiment with. And once you’re done adventuring you can always head to the Heroes’ Hangout to paint miniatures or play the ‘Hauntlet’ arcade game.
OrbusVR: Reborn
Back in the days when VR players were crying out for RPGs there was OrbusVR. Developer Orbus Online then reworked the entire game creating OrbusVR: Reborn. An MMORPG, OrbusVR: Reborn has hundreds of hours of content for you and your mates to delve into.
Select from 8 playable classes and try your hand at fishing. Or go on 5-player dungeons runs and 10-player raids before chilling at the Highsteppe Tavern.
A Township Tale
Want an actual job? Then A Township Tale is where you want to be. Starting with an abandoned town, you and a group of friends can bring it back to life, taking on roles like being a Blacksmith or a woodsman.
On the other hand, there’s a far wider world to explore so you’ll also need a few warriors to venture into the caves and forests. Bountiful resources can be found there but so can dangerous enemies. A Township Tale can be played solo but it works far better with a group of friends.
Journey Of The Gods
From the minds that brought you Face Your Fears and Back for Blood, comes Journey of the Gods. Kind of like The Legend of Zelda meets Monster Hunter Rise but in VR, with physical combat.
The usual storyline here, you’re the only one who can save the land from an evil menace. Armed with goodies like a magical sword and a trusty crossbow, Journey of the Gods is a stylish adventure. The twist is that you can unlock the power of the gods to solve puzzles and turn the tide of battle. In your godly form you can flatten trees with your hands and pick lightning bolts out of the clouds.
Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrok
The original Shadowgate was a point-and-click adventure from the late ’80s that has seen plenty of revisions over the years. Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrok is the very latest edition, bringing the series into VR for the first time.
Using the story from the first book in the Shadowgate Saga, Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrok is a classic dungeon crawler. Wielding a magic shield and wand, mater spells as you venture deeper into the mines, dealing with deadly creatures, traps and ingenious riddles along the way.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
We couldn’t ignore it, could we? Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been one of the definitive RPGs for the past 10 years. The addition of VR support just made it even better and more immersive. You’ve probably already played, heck, most gamers have likely trod the plains and mountains of Tamriel.
It’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR not much else needs saying.
