Tabletop board games have been entertaining us all for generations. So it is hardly surprising that virtual reality would gain a few over the years, transporting players to worlds like never before. But which should you spend your time and effort delving into? Here is XR Source’s selection of the best VR board games.
The Best VR Board Games
For centuries players from around the world have met up at tables to devise complex strategies to defeat their opponents. Now that same gameplay can be enjoyed on a virtual tabletop but with a similar level of interaction thanks to the power of VR.
Below you’ll find titles highlighting VR board gaming, playable across a variety of VR headsets including Meta Quest 2.
Demeo
If you’re looking for multiplayer board gaming goodness with a D&D flavour then Demeo is what you’re after. Supporting up to four players, Demeo is a dungeon crawler where you work together to fight through monstrous enemies to defeat an evil boss.
Entirely turn-based, Demeo can be played seated or standing. You chose from one of five adventures, select a character class such as an Archer or Wizard then head into the depths. Characters can be picked up and moved a certain distance, and when engaged in combat you roll a virtual die to determine the outcome. There are loads of strategies involved and once you’re done adventuring you can always head to the Heroes’ Hangout.
Catan VR
One of the most beloved board games of modern times, Catan VR immerses you in the game like only VR can. Offering up to four-player online matches – or you can practice on your own – settle in for hours of entertainment.
Watch the island gameplay come to life as you begin to explore and harvest goods. Trade with players as you try and grow your settlements, producing more resources and claiming more land. All in an endeavour to collect those vital Victory Points to claim the win.
Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl
A real action-strategy title, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl is all about deck building to create powerful armies to wage war with. Collect and upgrade dozens of cards as you progress through each battle, seeing the cards come to life as you place them.
Featuring 20+ battle arenas, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl is all about carefully selecting the right card for the job. Field plenty of archers if your opponent is throwing waves of blimps at you. But be wary that you don’t specialise too much and leave yourself open. Great for those who love multiplayer tournaments.
Tsuro
Time for a far more tranquil, relaxing board game experience. Set in a beautiful garden Tsuro is all about placing tiles to guide your stone around the board.
Tiles have various paths so choose wisely, you don’t want your stone to leave the board. Likewise, other players can guide their stone and manipulate yours to their advantage. Be wary and watchful of how all those paths crisscross. A perfectly engrossing strategy game in VR.
Table of Tales: The Crooked Crown
Purely single-player this one. Table of Tales: The Crooked Crown is a tabletop adventure on the high seas! You guide a party of four scoundrels through a narrative-driven game featuring turn-based combat and encounters with dice, cards and skill checks.
All the scoundrels you control have their own unique abilities and stats, which can then be customised to suit your needs. With over 20 encounters and 40+ enemy types, it is up to you whether you use powerful magic, head straight into battle, charm or sneak your way past each challenge.
Chess Club
What would a board game list be without one of the true classics, Chess? It’s a game almost everyone has encountered at some point, legendary and complex, chess is the ultimate battle of wits.
Playing against an AI or someone online, Chess Club offers a variety of environments to enjoy the game in. Featuring casual and rated matches, you can see the history of your moves, change the time rules and customise your avatar. Chess Club even features hand-tracking support on Meta Quest.
Neverboard
As the name suggests this is a gameplay experience designed so that you should (supposedly) never get bored. Neverboard, in actuality, is a permanent game night space offering a selection of games and a space to socialise in VR.
With Crazy 8s free to play additional content can be purchased in game if you and your friends enjoy the title.
