What makes a good multiplayer game? Is it the visuals, gameplay, social options, regular content drops and more? Quite honestly it needs to be a slice of all of these variables, as well as one final thing. That indescribable spark that makes everyone who dips their toe in suddenly want more. There are so many immersive videogames that have multiplayer components trying to whittle the list down to seven is a task in itself. But here we go, the best VR multiplayer games!
The Best VR Multiplayer Games
For this selection, XR Source was looking for a real mix of gameplay variations. It’s way too easy to select a bunch of multiplayer shooters or MMORPG’s, we’ve got more specific recommendations for those – check out the list at the bottom of this article. A VR multiplayer needs to be fun, engaging, replayable and showcase VR in all of its glory.
Below you’ll find titles (in no particular order) highlighting the best-looking games from across the board. Playable across a variety of VR headsets, including PC VR, PSVR/PSVR 2 and Meta Quest 2.
A particular favourite here at XR Source, BigBox VR’s Population: One is a great immersive alternative to Fortnite. In teams of three, you and your mates – or total strangers – take on others to be crowned battle royale champions. The big difference with Population: One over its flatscreen rivals is the sheer physicality. Climb up the side of any building and put your arms out to glide to a new area.
The developer regularly updates the giant map with new areas and features, encouraging you to come back for more. Plus, if you’re on Quest 2, Population: One is free!
Among Us VR
A party game like no other, Among Us VR made its welcome VR debut in late 2022. Originally a mobile game that gained popularity during the pandemic, developer Innersloth called on the skills of Schell Games and Robot Teddy to rework the VR edition.
The same tense gameplay remains, where you have to find the alien imposters before they kill you. Whilst also trying to fix the spaceship they’re intent on sabotaging. This being VR you’re not looking at a top-down map view, you’re in the spaceship scrabbling around with your fellow crew to deduce who isn’t who they say they are. Lot’s of fun for up to 10 players and it’s cheap as well. The game has become so popular there’s even an Among Us animated series in the works.
Walkabout Mini Golf
Everyone needs some minigolf in their life with Might Coconut’s Walkabout Mini Golf delivering that in spades (or should that be putters?). One of the most highly reviewed VR games for any platform, Walkabout Mini Golf has a base selection of 8, 18-hole golf courses for you to try. Then there’s a multitude of DLC courses available to keep the excitement alive.
Playing minigolf by yourself is enjoyable but it is far more exciting with a few mates. Walkabout Mini Golf offers a 1v1 online quick match mode if you’re after an instant challenge. What you really want to do is create a private room with 8 of your friends, making for a true party experience.
Time to take to the skies for some dogfighting action. Bit Planet Games’ Ultrawings 2 delivers a mixture of arcade and simulator-style gaming, allowing you to pilot a range of vehicles to complete missions. Once you’ve got the hang of all the aircraft in the single-player mode it’s time to step into the multiplayer.
Ultrawings 2 supports up to 8 players in its online multiplayer, providing an exhilarating experience where you try and take opponents out without crashing into the ground. Physically grab the stick and throttle to head skyward or use your controller’s stick and buttons for an arcade feel.
If you love a good strategy game to play with friends then Demeo is what you’re after. Supporting up to four players, Demeo is a dungeon crawler where you work together to fight through monstrous enemies to defeat an evil boss.
Entirely turn-based, Demeo can be played seated or standing. You chose from one of five adventures, select a character class such as an Archer or Wizard then head into the depths. Characters can be picked up and moved a certain distance, and when engaged in combat you roll a virtual die to determine the outcome. There are loads of strategies involved and once you’re done adventuring you can always head to the Heroes’ Hangout.
Zenith: The Last City
The only MMORPG that’s making this list is Ramen VR’s Zenith: The Last City. Join other players in this magical fantasy realm, where you can hang out in the titular city or venture into the great beyond.
Zenith: The Last City you can join in public events with strangers or friends, exploring dungeons or going on raids. There are even engrossing story-driven quests if you like some narrative to your gameplay experience. With three character classes to choose from, you can focus on being a Blade Master, an expert in physical combat. Then there’s the Essence Mage for those sorcerers among you. Or how about the Cyber Ninja, who doesn’t love a fusion of magic and technology?
We had to include it. Not featuring the indie hit Gorilla Tag almost felt wrong considering the amount of love the VR community has given it. A purely multiplayer videogame the name says it all, become a gorilla and play tag.
There’s more to it, of course. With a range of gameplay modes, there’s the standard 3-player tag, an Infection Mode for four or more players; The Hunt, which offers a target to chase and Paintbrawl, where teams go head-to-head in a paintball battle using slingshots. Prepare for a workout as well because the locomotion system involves using your hands and arms to grab and jump from surface to surface.
And there you have it. That wraps up our picks of the seven best VR multiplayer games! What are your thoughts? Which ones did we miss? Let us know in the comments below!
