The 7 Best VR Sports Games

Almost everyone on the entire planet has a love of one sport or another. Whether that’s more commercial sports like football, extreme sports such as skydiving or more sedate pastimes like snooker. Plenty of those translate rather well into virtual reality (as if you didn’t realise). And so here are XR Source’s best VR sports games we think you should play.

The Best VR Sports Games

In a similar vein to VR rhythm-action games, immersive sports titles tend to be energetic experiences. They’ll get your heart thumping like you’ve been for a run, without all the unnecessary faff of proper sports gear and equipment.

Below you’ll find titles (in no particular order) highlighting the sports games from across the board. Playable across a variety of VR headsets, including PC VR, PSVR/PSVR 2 and Meta Quest 2.

Creed: Rise to Glory

Creed: Rise to Glory Championship Edition

Boxing titles have found a natural home in VR and Creed: Rise to Glory Championship Edition leads the crop. From VR veterans Survios, this boxing videogame is part simulator and part gritty action film. An official tie-in with the film franchise, the game brings together 22 different boxers drawn from the iconic Creed and Rocky universe.

In the campaign, you play Adonis Creed looking to become world heavyweight champion under the stewardship of Rocky Balboa. The original Creed: Rise to Glory arrived in 2019 but with the release of Creed 3, the Championship Edition added new characters, costumes and arena options for the movie. Alongside the single-player mode, there is multiplayer, for a far more realistic boxing experience.

Best VR Sports Games - The Climb 2

The Climb 2

The original The Climb was one of the first games to support Oculus Rift’s Touch controllers. A beautiful game to look at and play, thankfully Crytek made a sequel, even better than its predecessor. As the name suggests, The Climb 2 is a climbing game, pure and simple. Carefully ascend mountainous peaks to reach the top, with gorgeous views to greet you at the top.

Maybe not the best game if you have a fear of heights (or maybe you want to conquer them?) The Climb 2 added new locations including skyscrapers to beat. All the courses have multiple routes so you can try different paths for the fastest route. The sequel also introduced new features like dynamic ladders which bend and flex and an asynchronous multiplayer mode.

Walkabout Mini Golf - Cherry Blossom

Walkabout Mini Golf

Walkabout Mini Golf is in a league of its own, featuring a number of times in XR Source’s ‘Best VR’ lists. Great in single-player or with up to seven other people in multiplayer there’s not much else to say. Loads of 18-hole golf courses, secret golf balls to find and fun aplenty.

Best VR Sports Games - Golf+

GOLF+

Previously called Top Golf with Pro Putt, this golfing simulator now goes by the far catchier Golf+. Affiliated with the PGA Tour, Golf+ features iconic real-world courses, customisable equipment from brands including Callaway and all the advanced stats a golf fan needs.

It comes with three free original GOLF+ courses as well as mini-games and weekly challenges. There’s even some mini-golfing goodness thrown in too. Plus there’s an extensive range of DLC to expand the experience with new courses and more.

Best VR Sports Games - Racket: Nx

Racket: Nx

Mixing squash with some arcade action is Racket: Nx. The game has been available for several years now, dropping players into a futuristic arena for a game like no other. Played inside a giant glass dome, Racket: Nx requires precision and power in equal measure, as you aim for targets on the walls. They all need to be removed to progress but some are more dangerous than others. Plus they’re all around you!

Featuring two single-player modes – a campaign and an endless runner – Racket: Nx also features a competitive multiplayer mode. Two players inside the same arena go head to head, trying to maintain their energy levels whilst whittling down their opponents. Make sure you have plenty of room to play, it can get engrossing.

Best VR Sports Games - Gym Class

Gym Class

Looking for the ultimate basketball VR game, then check out Gym Class. This basketball simulator has become insanely popular on Quest 2 thanks to its accurate physics, multiple gameplay modes and the fact that it’s free to download.

In single-player you can go up against AI bots to practice your 3-pointers or your dunks before trying to embarrass your friends. Of course, there are plenty of customisation options, statistics to delve into and more to enjoy. If you want to spend some cash there’s always the NBA Bundle. This includes apparel from all 30 teams, a virtual replica of an NBA team’s court and a team-branded basketball.

Best VR Sports Games - Real VR Fishing

Real VR Fishing

Time for the most tranquil of sports titles on this list, Real VR Fishing. Drama, sweat and tears are not part of the course here. Real VR Fishing is about taking your time, choosing the right equipment and enjoying some gorgeous scenery whilst awaiting the next bite.

Transport yourself to real-world locations to fish, whether you prefer saltwater or freshwater the choice is yours. You can then create your own aquarium to display your spoils! Fish with up to three friends or when you’re fishing solo watch Youtube, listen to music or podcasts in-game.
