Virtual pet simulators for Meta Quest are few and far between. Bogo was a fan favourite for a while until Meta decided to discontinue the app in early 2024. If you’re a cat lover, then Neko Atsume Purrfect Kitty Collector is a good game to try. But what if you want something more? Maybe a creature that breathes flames and can fly? Thankfully, Spunge Games has just the answer in its new mixed reality offering, Eggy. And as our friends over at 131XR have found in their review, Eggy could very well melt your heart.

Which came first, the dragon or the egg?

This VR pet simulator revolves around nurturing your very own dragon. Beginning with a mysterious, glowing egg, you utilise magic to hatch this scaly critter before doing all the things a parent should. Making sure it’s well fed, training the little tike, playing games with them and letting it fly around a virtual world. Oh, and picking up its rainbow poop of course!

Thanks to mixed reality, this all takes place within your home. Your pet dragon will run around to its heart’s content, full of smiles and energy. To keep those happiness levels up, you’ll need to provide it with suitable items that any pet might need. A store features water bowls, litter trays, balls, bones and many other items that are useful for rearing a baby dragon.

Furthermore, fully utilising the feature set on Meta Quest 3 & 3S, Eggy employs hand tracking throughout. While immersive, as 131XR’s review finds, this has its own positives and negatives.

Eggy Review

Eggy immediately starts things off by getting you to hatch an egg. But to do so, you need to cast spells, which can alter how your dragon turns out. Different spells will have different effects, adding an early replay factor to the game. Thus, encouraging players to try each spell to see what happens.

Once your new baby dragon has entered the world, you can begin to get set up, placing items around your locale whilst learning various hand gestures to train your dragon. One of 131XR’s favourite features was the ability to place a special door and window. This allows the dragon to venture into its own virtual world, taking flight and interacting with other creatures. Players are unable to step into this realm, yet the ability to peer out of the window offers an impressively immersive effect.

However, 131XR’s review of Eggy also finds a rather simple pet simulator. The game has been billed as an MR adventure, but it’s more akin to your standard pet-sim game. Feeding, playing, and generally looking after your dragon.

Can Eggy be ‘Best in Show’?

At the moment, Eggy doesn’t have too much competition from other pet simulators. Apart from the aforementioned Neko Atsume, Meta Quest also features Pet Simulator, Pets & Stuff, and I Am Cat – although the latter, you’re actually the cat.

Eggy’s biggest competition is yet to launch, another MR title called Stay: Forever Home. This is another fantasy-style virtual pet, with the added feature that you can enter a VR world with it!
