Plotting the success stories in VR isn’t always easy. Meta rarely release sales figures of any note, and software developers are often reluctant to talk about game sales. We occasionally get some good news regarding Gorilla Tag or Beat Saber breaking records for sales on Meta Quest, but outside of those juggernauts the chart for game sales growth would be missing many key data points. As such, when a smaller studio like 3R Games stands up and accounts for their success, we should all be taking note. And that’s exactly what has happened.

Thief Simulator VR Sees Success

Thief Simulator VR: Greenview Street launched back in 2022, as a VR adaptation of 3R Games’ popular Thief Simulator series. The game has since been keenly supported by the studio, with a continuous wave of patches and DLC add-ons. This has lead to a great response from a growing community, pushing Thief Simulator VR: Greenview Street to over 310,000 unit sales. What’s more, according to an X post from the studio, this number relates to Meta Quest Store sales only, and doesn’t include PSVR 2.

The original non-VR version of Thief Simulator debuted on PC back in 2018. The game was warmly received by the audience there. Thief Simulator VR: Greenview Street is by-and-large considered to be a pretty faithful conversion, making good use of the immersive nature of VR. This isn’t a quick cash-grab port, it seems, but rather a well considered VR edition of a much loved game, similar to that of Powerwash Simulator VR.

Everything You Need to Know about Thief Simulator VR

So, what’s the difference between Thief Simulator VR and Thief Simulator VR: Greenview Street? Well, nothing actually. Thief Simulator VR: Greenview Street is the initial launch package, with new locations added via DLC. Each DLC is given the name of the location in which it’s set. So we have Richie R. Street, The Motel and Spooky House currently available.

On Meta Quest, you can buy a package including the base game and all of these DLCs for £14.99 GBP (currently discounted to £6.99 at the time of writing). As stated above, the game is also available on PSVR 2. However, there is currently no bundle available, and the game is a little more expensive, coming in at £19.99.

Finally, there’s also a PC VR version available via Steam. This is priced at £15.49, and also regularly receives new content and updates.

What’s the best way to play Thief Simulator VR? Well, that depends on the hardware you have available of course. However, given the pricing differences and the content available across all platforms, XR Source would suggest that the Meta Quest version is the way to go.

What’s Next for 3R Games?

3R games seems to be investing heavily in VR. Not only is the studio championing the success of Thief Simulator VR: Greenview Street sales on Meta Quest, but also the team is promising a new Thief Simulator VR experience. Thief Simulator VR: Multiplayer is currently in development, promising to bring cooperative gameplay to the VR editions of Thief Simulator for the first time.

Furthermore, the official website for 3R Games states: “We also plan to release an original title under the working title “Taurus” intended for the Meta Quest, PC VR, and Steam platforms.”

So it seems 3R Games’ confidence in the VR medium has been bolstered considerably by the success of Thief Simulator VR sales on Meta Quest. We here at XR Source certainly hope to see more from the studio in the very near future!
