There once was a time when Beat Saber ruled the roost as the game every VR fan owned. Its addictive rhythm action gameplay was easy to pick up and play, with lots of modern tunes to enjoy. Undoubtedly still a pioneer in the space, a relatively new contender has muscled its way in. It’s none other than Gorilla Tag, with its Meta Quest ratings easily outstripping the veteran rhythm title.

Take a look at the Quest Store’s ratings for both titles and you’ll see the disparity – as spotted by Mixed News. Beat Saber has been available on the Quest platform since day one, 2019 to be precise. In that time it has garnered 50k+ in player ratings, an impressive tally. However, Gorilla Tag has destroyed that figure with a current tally of 102,500 ratings and counting. Managing this feat after initially launching via App Lab in 2021.

Developed by Another Axiom, Gorilla Tag has become this unstoppable behemoth thanks to being free-to-play and its social features. Oh, and it is super fun to play with its physical locomotion mechanics.

That Gorilla Tag magic

Gorilla Tag is the first game on the Quest Store to hit this major milestone, highlighting the power of this multiplayer game. Head on over to Steam, however, and the figures are very different. Most likely because Gorilla Tag isn’t free on the platform.

If you’ve not played before the game is all about playing tag, in VR, as gorillas. Purely an online multiplayer, Gorilla Tag in actuality has four gameplay modes, the standard 3-player tag, an Infection Mode for four or more players; The Hunt, which offers a target to chase and Paintbrawl, where teams go head-to-head in a paintball battle using slingshots. No joysticks or buttons are needed, just use your hands and arms to grab and jump from surface to surface.

Furthermore, this isn’t the only game Another Axiom is now working on. In 2023 the studio teased the first details on a spiritual successor codenamed Project A2. Keeping with those Gorilla Tag mechanics fans love, this time around you’re a robot champion competing in zero-g arenas. Not much has been seen of the project since though.
