Meta Quest Inches Closer to Apple Vision Pro With v62 Update

Apple’s new Vision Pro headset (sorry, spatial computer) is now officially out in the wild! But if you don’t have $3500 USD to spend or live outside of the US, then take note of Meta’s latest update for Quest. The rollout of the v62 update for Meta Quest began this past week with some major new features. One of which brings the Quest closer to Apple Vision Pro territory, spatial video playback.

Having spatial video playback functionality means that Meta Quest supports the MV-HVEC video codec. For consumers who own an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, they can now upload spatial videos via the Meta Quest mobile app. Then pop on your Quest headset and watch those videos in glorious 3D.

If you’ve not got one of the supported iPhones, Meta has made some demo videos for everyone to view. Simply go into the spatial videos section of the Files menu to find them.

So what else can you find in the new Meta Quest v62 update? Next, you’ve got improved controller support. You’ve always been able Bluetooth controllers but now Meta Quest Browser also support gamepads. Furthermore, PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controllers and PlayStation 4 DualShock have seen enhanced Meta Quest support.

If you’re a fan of livestreaming then we’ve got good news. Facebook livestreaming is now available to all users – previously only available to select users in the v56 update. Plus, YouTube livestreaming is now possible with chats visible in your Meta Quest headset. You’ll need to use OBS software on your PC to do so though.

Hand tracked, single-gesture actions have been introduced. You can now short pinch to show and hide the Universal Menu or long pinch to recenter the display. Whilst on Meta Quest 3, the headset can now save up to 15 spaces so you don’t need to keep rescanning a room if you move around a lot.

Finally, the renamed Quest Link – previously called the Oculus PC app – can run at up to 120Hz and supports hand and body tracking. It also now officially supports Nvidia’s 4000 series GPUs.

It’s worth noting that as always, the update can take a while to roll out to all headsets.
