PSVR 2 owners had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Bit Planet Games’ Ultrawings 2 for a while now. Slated for a 2023 launch, the studio kept on saying ‘soonish’ without specifying a launch date. As you may be aware, Ultrawings 2 dropped onto PSVR 2 last week, quite unexpectedly. And as it turns out, the release caught Bit Planet Games off guard too.

Ultrawings 2 arrived in the PlayStation Store last Thursday, 25th January. “Shadow dropping Ultrawings 2 on PSVR2 today was not on our 2024 bingo card but, well, here we are,” said the studio on X (formerly Twitter).

The team followed up: “Hey all, glad everyone is enjoying the newly released #PSVR2 version of #Ultrawings2. While the release was unforeseen we want to stress that we don’t know what happened. It might have been something we did or didn’t do properly. We simply don’t know! On the plus side the Dayish 1 patch has been submitted and should be out within days.”

So it seems that, for the time being, there’s a bit of a mystery surrounding the flight sim’s arrival.

Even with the surprisingly unusual launch, the initial feedback from players has been good. Current ratings on the PS Store give Ultrawings 2 a highly favourable 4.82 out of 5.

The game was initially released for Meta Quest and PCVR headsets back in 2022. It has always been a firm favourite among VR players thanks to its mix of arcade and flight sim control schemes. For the serious flight fan, you can choose to fly each plane (and the helicopter) with full manual, and mechanical controls. Or, if you have the kit, throw in a HOTAS setup to soar through the various challenges.

And there is plenty to do. With a total of six unlockable aircraft to master there are huge islands to explore and hundreds of challenges to complete. From skilful flying courses to popping balloons using a dart pistol, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. And that’s before you even consider the eight-player multiplayer, offering up giant online dogfights.
