Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior: Everything You Need to Know

At the beginning of the month, quite out of the blue, Rebellion and Just Add Water revealed a new Sniper Elite VR game. Called Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior the game follows a similar narrative path to 2021’s Sniper Elite VR, where you play an Italian resistance fighter during WW2. This time around, there’s a chilly winter setting to explore as you eliminate the Nazi threat.

A Sniper’s story

The first game dropped you in a sundrenched region of southern Italy, Sicily to be precise. As a skilled marksman aiming to remove Axis forces from his homeland. Not much has changed in Winter Warrior, your now in the northern part of the country trying to stop another Nazi offensive. They’ve created ‘wonder-weapons’ (whatever they might be) and only you and your trusty sniper rifle can stop them.

The first game featured a decent 18-mission campaign, hopefully Winter Warrior will feature a simlair experience. However, Rebellion and Just Add Water have only said the sequel features a ‘riveting campaign’ which is vague to say the least.

What we do hope is that Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior will address some of the originals issues. A generally well received game, Sniper Elite VR was hampered with a repetitive level design and cluttered holster system.

X-Ray Kill Cam returns

When the trailer for Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior was released there was a noteable absence of the franchises’ most noteable feature, the X-Ray Kill Cam. This brutal shot of a bullet shattering an enemy’s bones was even more visceral in VR. Thankfully, while it didn’t appear in the trailer, the X-Ray Kill Cam is still very much present in the sequel.

New Additions

Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior isn’t solely leaning on the weight of the long running franchise, it bringing its own uniqueness to Meta Quest. Sniper Elite VR made excellent use of PSVR’s Aim controller, so this time around the developers have ensured support for the ProTubeVR range of gunstocks. Furthermore, to feel the sensation of every bullet, you can also pair Winter Soldier up with the bHaptics range of vests.

Additional hardware aside, the game will include two additional gameplay modes, Sniper Hunt and Last Stand.

  • Sniper Hunt – “an intense game of cat and mouse that pits you against expert Nazi snipers. Take out a patrol of enemy soldiers to lure out the snipers before relocating to take on the next opponent.”
  • Last Stand – “sees you digging in against waves of enemies. Think and act fast to gather weapons and ammunition, and set traps, before finding the ideal location to fight the oncoming forces.”

Winter Warrior’s Release Date & Price

There’s not long to wait, with the launch scheduled for 30th November 2023. It’ll be priced at £10.99 GBP,$14.99 USD,€14.99 EUR.

Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior on PSVR 2

Currently, the game is exclusive to Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro. No other platforms, including PSVR 2, are expected to support the game.

And that’s everything you need to know about Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior ahead of launch. Keep an eye out for XR Source’s review for further details.
