Soul Covenant is the latest VR game from Japanese studio Thirdverse. The team behind Swords of Gargantua, Altair Breaker and X8, the game is currently playable at the Tokyo Games Show. After an initial tease earlier this month, Thirdverse has released new Soul Covenant screenshots and a trailer.
As you can see from the new imagery, Soul Covenant is going to be a jam-packed tactical action game. Set in a near-future desolate Japan, the game is an epic battle between humanity and machines. Players will face hordes of robotic enemies, with a heavy focus on melee combat. Weapons shown so far include swords, chain swords and scythes, all of which are transformable.
“The weapons you hold are crafted from the remains of fallen comrades. Weapons have two different forms, enabling versatile combat styles, reach, and power,” the developer explains.

Very little else has been revealed regarding the mechanics, gameplay loop and abilities. If it is anywhere similar to Thirdverse’s previous titles, a roguelike system might be put into play, upgrading abilities upon death.
The narrative might revolve around humanity fighting the machines, but there is one non-organic on your side, Ai Kayano. “An artificial intelligence standing on the side of humanity. Its origins are unclear, but its power is fundamental in countering the machine tyranny. It manages and operates the Reincarnation Program, recording the ‘countless deaths’ with its own eyes and then storing them into a database.”
As previously reported, Soul Covenant has a stellar cast of developers behind it. These include the likes of ex-Final Fantasy, NiER, Xenoblade and Bloodborne creators.
Soul Covenant will come to Meta Quest 2, Steam and PlayStation VR 2 in early 2024. Check out the new trailer here.
