The Little Nightmares franchise has seen great success on PC and consoles – although the third installment was less well received. As XRSource reported last summer, publisher Bandai Namco confirmed that a VR installment was on the way, but didn’t reveal a time frame. Now the Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes is almost upon us, with a multiplatform launch scheduled for April.

Little Nightmares Comes to VR

As you may already be aware, the flatscreen version of Little Nightmares is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer, famous for its dark and creepy design and atmosphere. That ambiance remains in Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes, however, the big change is that of perspective. Rather than seeing the tiny characters from a third-person viewpoint, the VR edition will go first person.

This is an exciting change for the series, albiet not unexpected for a VR game. Players take on the role of Dark Six, a mysterious figure in the shape of a little girl, who has appeared in the previous games. Built specifically for VR, as you explore the disturbing world of Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes you’ll discover intricate puzzles, hidden paths, and secrets buried in the darkness.

All in a bid for Dark Six to reunite with her other self, Six.

Little Nightmares History

Little Nightmares was a breakout hit for Tarsier Studios when it launched in 2017. So much so that it spawned an even better sequel in 2021, Little Nightmares II. However, for the third installment Bandai Namco went with a different developer, Until Dawn creators Supermassive Games. The change wasn’t welcome by fans, with Little Nightmares III generally seen as the weakest of the three games.

Hence why a lot of fans prefer Tarsier Studios’ latest project, Reanimal, retainin that atmospheric adventure‑puzzle game whilst leaning even more into the horror element.

As Altered Echoes is an entirely different kind of project, hopefully it can retain the spirit of the franchise whilst embracing what makes VR great.

Launch Details

Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes is set to launch for Meta Quest, PSVR 2 and SteamVR headsets on 23rd April 2026. You can wishlist the game on all supported stores.
