It’s always sad to hear when an online multiplayer decides to shut up shop. Especially where VR is concerned, because there are never enough players to go around. And that’s the case for Inverse, the 4v1 asymmetrical horror game. Developer MassVR has confirmed that the servers will be shut down in March.

No more Inverse
On the Inverse Steam page (which has now been delisted), MassVR states that: “After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down our game servers on March 31, 2026.”
For those of you who continue to enjoy Inverse, the team goes onto say: “Until that time, all online features/servers will remain active, and you can continue to play and enjoy the game as usual.”
What was Inverse?
Like others in the genre, Inverse’s multiplayer gameplay relied on four players as Agents trying to complete an objective. The other ‘fifth’ player took on the role of the Nul monster, whose only goal was to stop them at all costs. It’s a fairly familiar setup to anyone who’s played Dead by Daylight or Back 4 Blood, for example.
As an Agent you have to restore power to the control terminals, eventually unlocking the weapons vaults to go on the offensive. As the monster, the player can rely on supernatural abilities and perks to hunt the Agents down.
Inverse is also available for Meta Quest, and can still be found on the store.
Where to get your Asymmetric kicks
With Inverse now shutting its doors, where else can you and a few of your mates turn to. The most similar is BlackGate, which officially launched in early January after a brief Early Access period. Another sci-fi horror-style multiplayer, the advantage BlackGate currently has is its free-to-play as one of the human Engineers. For those that want to play as the alien, they need to upgrade and pay for the full game. It’s a unique approach to the problem of attracting players.
