If you want to know which VR games on Steam were played the most in 2025, the platform has just released a comprehensive list. And just like PSVR 2’s recent top download list, most of the results aren’t too surprising. In fact, they’re almost disheartening, there’s only one from last year. The majority of the most played Steam VR games are actually several years old.

Most Played Rankings
Steam has ranked its ‘most played’ games in Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers, indicating their popularity. Within those tiers, however, the games are sorted randomly. There are no figures highlighting which titles within a specific tier performed better than their compatriots.
A total of 50 games are listed, but we’ve chosen only the Platinum and Gold tiers to provide an example. You can find the full list here.

Why All Older Titles?
As you may have noticed, not many of those games listed are new. In fact, the only 2025 VR game to make it onto the rankings was VR Secretary: Ailey Edition on the Silver tier, most likely because it’s free. Even so, it’s surprising that the likes of Arken Age (January), GORN 2 (April), and The Midnight Walk (May), haven’t made an appearance.
Looking at it another way, it’s great to see the likes of Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is still going strong to this day, 10 years on. While games like No Man’s Sky and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR have added VR support later on, and continue to prove popular.
But it does make us wonder if the VR industry has become stagnant. Technically, VR games have come on leaps and bounds since those early years, yet the scope for experimentation has withered as studios focus on better revenue-generating ideas.
What will 2026 hold?
Should Steam release another list like this in 2027, it’ll probably remain very similar. But that should give games from 2025 to make more of a mark, including Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, which only launched in December.
And let’s not forget that Steam Frame is on the horizon. This could very well put the cat among the pigeons, bringing in new users who may want the latest VR titles for their shiny new headset.
