Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow marks a bold reinvention of the iconic stealth franchise for VR. The game brings physical immersion, tactile stealth mechanics, and atmospheric world design to Meta Quest, PSVR 2 and PC VR, inviting players into a dark, labyrinthine world where shadows are your greatest ally. But can it live up to its non-VR predecessors? Find out in 131XR’s Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow review below.

Stealth in the Shadows
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow casts you as Magpie, a cunning thief navigating the oppressive city. As you sneak through towering rooftops, back alleys, and stately manors, stealth and observation are more important than outright confrontation. Using immersive interactions such as pickpocketing guards, unlocking doors, and quietly neutralising threats, the game captures the essence of what made the original Thief series beloved while translating it into a VR context.
The game’s mission structure encourages tactile play. Whether you’re scaling walls, ducking into shadows to evade patrols, or manipulating tools in real time, there’s a satisfying physicality to each action. This immersive interaction feels genuinely native to VR and often delivers moments of tension and triumph that flat-screen stealth games can only hint at.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow Review
While clearly taking the core principles of the Thief series and ably adapting them to VR, in 131XR’s Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow review (embedded below) the team found that the game isn’t as open as you might expect. In fact, it’s almost as if the game had ignored a lot of the progress made in the stealth genre over the past 25 years and instead is based on outdated level design. But that’s not to say it’s not fun.
Rather than large, free-form open environments, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is based on smaller pockets. You’ll be dropped into a level and given a destination and it’s up to you to figure out how to get there. However, all-too-often it’s simply one route which offers little to your own interpretation.

A Stealth Game Worth Trying
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow might not be a perfect replication of the classic series. However, for players craving a stealth experience that leverages VR’s strengths it remains a compelling title worthy of attention. Its careful balance of atmospheric world design, VR-native mechanics, and heritage-inspired stealth gives players plenty to enjoy, even if the experience occasionally stumbles on technical polish or depth.
