Whether it’s blowing stuff up in Angry Birds VR or literally smashing rooms to pieces in Hotel R’n’R, destruction in VR is great. On the horizon is a collaborative effort between XR Games (Beatable, Zombieland: Headshot Fever) and Obstinate, set to deliver an edible multiplayer full of mayhem, Smash Eat Grow.

What is Smash Eat Grow?

Smash Eat Grow is a free-to-play (F2P) online multiplayer, putting players in a playground where everything is edible. Yes, that’s right, you get to cause carnage by eating everything. And if you can’t eat it, then punch it to smithereens.

Players take the form of aliens called Smashers, who are very hungry and very irresponsible. They’ve arrived on Earth for a tasty treat, and everything is on the menu. What’s more, the more Smashers eat, the more they grow, and that means a wider menu selection. And we’re not simply talking edible environments either; other, smaller Smashers also serve as a yummy treat.

A delicious environment

Normally, you shouldn’t play with your food, but in the case of Smash Eat Grow, that’s actively encouraged! Cities are culinary playgrounds for Smashers, in which they can punch, grab, wield, throw and eat anything in the game.

This game has been a dream of mine for years — to let players step into the skin of an alien Smasher in VR and compete in a fully-destructible and interactive city with their friends,” said Storm Griffith, Founder & CEO of Obstinate, in a statement. “The tech and resources simply didn’t exist to make it feel right until now- but I’m happy to say we’ve succeeded in creating a world designed to collapse under your claws, and it’s finally time to deliver to audiences the mayhem, laughs and joy that we have been feeling during the development process. Let’s smash it!”

When and Where?

Smash Eat Grow doesn’t have a release date just yet, but it’s slated for Early Access on Meta Quest very soon.

It’ll certainly help to liven up the free-to-play gaming space on Meta Quest, which is dominated by games like Animal Company and Gorilla Tag. Also expected very soon is Schell Games’ first foray into the F2P multiplayer space with Project Freefall.
