Rebellion’s Zombie Army franchise is beloved by fans across the world. When a VR version was announced, we were all very excited. Slight hiccups occurred, delaying the initial 2024 launch and then the May 2025 release, but thankfully, the game landed on all major platforms in June. So, has it been worth the wait? As our friends at 131XR have found in their latest review, Zombie Army VR delivers on the franchise’s legacy.

Nothin’ but Zombies
When it comes to the Zombie Army series, the last major flatscreen instalment was 2021’s Zombie Army 4. For fans of the game, they’ll be pleased the know that Zombie Army VR serves as a sort of prequel. The narrative takes place prior to Zombie Army 4. However, the story isn’t the main draw here, so if you’ve not played the other games, it doesn’t matter.
Set in an alternate WWII timeline, you play a Deadhunter tasked with hunting down zombie war criminals – yes, they’re that clever. What this means is lots and lots of Nazi zombies to kill as you try and save the day. And that’s it. You don’t buy a Zombie Army game for depth, you buy it for being a fun action experience, which it delivers.
Zombie Army VR Review
As 131XR notes in the review, Zombie Army VR has already had plenty of critical feedback from players. But most of that doesn’t seem to be warranted. With your era-accurate weapons in hand, you’re led on a linear campaign through nicely detailed environments filled with the shambling dead. Guns have the kind of manual reloading mechanics you’d expect for a VR shooter nowadays, while level design and difficulty settings provide an ample challenge even on the normal setting.
And just like Rebellion’s other famous franchise, Sniper Elite, you’re treated to the occasional X-Ray Kill Cam. This adds a brutal, satisfying end to a zombie’s existence as your bullet shatters through a skull.
It must be said that Zombie Army VR doesn’t bring anything particularly new to the table. It is formulaic in its presentation and delivery. But that’s no bad thing and likely won’t put many zombie shooter fans off.
Undead Updates
As mentioned, fans have given Rebellion plenty of feedback, some more positive than others. While the studio has yet to release a roadmap of planned updates, the first patch has now been released.
This has improved areas across Meta Quest, PSVR 2 and PCVR editions. These include tackling some areas where FPS drops could occur, improvements to online play connectivity and voice chat, 3D audio for weapon fire and improved zombie behaviour throughout the game.
We’re also waiting to see when the previously mentioned Horde Mode will arrive.
