Soul Assembly, a UK studio that’s made considerable headway in VR, has made a rather bizarre announcement. Well, maybe not that bizarre, as it does seem to be coming a growing trend. Drop Dead: The Cabin, the critically acclaimed VR co-op survival shooter, is making its way to Steam later this year as a standalone, flatscreen PC title.

What is Drop Dead: The Cabin?
As stated above, Drop Dead: The Cabin was developed by Soul Assembly. It’s a co-op zombie shooter of reputatble quality. So much so in fact, that XRSource deemed it one of the best zombie games for Meta Quest.
The game launched in 2023 and was immediately popular amongst the core VR gaming demographic. However, it was also front-and-centre at the launch of the Meta Quest 3 thanks to a highly touted MR mode.
That MR mode, later deemed Drop Dead: The Cabin – Home Invasion, was also well received. It wasn’t without issue of course, being a relatively early MR experience, but it laid the groundwork for many MR experiences to come.
Drop Dead: The Cabin Flatscreen Edition
Described as a “love letter to classic 1980s horror,” the game immerses players in a fog-shrouded forest teeming with undead threats, challenging them to survive the night and secure extraction. The flatscreen edition of Drop Dead: The Cabin expands the co-op gameplay for up to four players. Furthermore, the PD edition will improve the visual quality in a number of areas. Revealed so far are:
- Improved texture quality
- Refined post-processing effects
- High-resolution baked lighting and shadows
The flatscreen edition of Drop Dead: The Cabin will be available to play during October NEXT Fest and will release in full shortly after. No specific date has yet been announced.

VR, or Not VR?
“The response to The Cabin in VR has been incredible,” said David Solari, CEO at Soul Assembly. “We’re excited to bring this experience to a broader audience, enhancing the game for PC players while maintaining the core elements that made it a hit in VR.”
In addition to upping the co-op gameplay to four players, Drop Dead: The Cabin will feature crossplay functionality between flatscreen and VR editions. Exactly how this will work is not currently known. Will the VR edition be updated to support four players, too? We’ll have to wait and see.
