While Microsoft have seemingly been putting the breaks on many of their early efforts in VR, with the cancellation of HoloLens and a forthcoming Windows 11 update culling Windows MR functionality, the Xbox brand is set to take another step closer. Xbox Game Pass is already available for Meta Quest, and back in 2024 Meta officially announced an ‘Xbox branded’ Meta Quest headset is in the works. But where is it, and how will it differ from a Meta Quest 3? In this article we’ll dive deeper into what we know about the Xbox VR headset, and what we should be expecting.

Xbox and Meta Join Forces: A Game-Changing VR Headset on the Horizon

The upcoming Xbox VR headset isn’t the first time Meta and Microsoft have collaborated. Indeed, the very first launch edition of the Oculus Rift VR headset came bundled with an Xbox controller. Microsoft and Xbox are collaborating again to produce a “limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox,” according to Meta.

This partnership could mark a significant milestone in the evolution of VR gaming, combining the iconic Xbox brand with Meta’s cutting-edge VR technology. Or instead, it could simply be an Xbox style skin on an existing Meta Quest 3 headset. As of now, we’re not really sure.

What we do know however, is that the forthcoming device is set to run on Meta’s Meta Horizon operating system. This is an unusual turn for an Xbox device, but in recent years we’ve seen Xbox applications running on PCs, smartphones, tablets, TVs and even Amazon Fire Sticks, so why not on a VR OS?

What to Expect from the Xbox-Branded VR Headset

While specific details about the headset remain under wraps, early teasers have revealed some exciting features. Mark Zuckerburg shared clues about the look and functionality we might see in the Xbox VR Headset in a spring 2024 Instagram stream:

  • Xbox Look and Feel: The device is expected to showcase Xbox’s signature aesthetics, catering to the vast community of Xbox enthusiasts. Additionally, the headset may come bundled with an Xbox controller and access to the popular Xbox Game Pass subscription service, offering gamers a comprehensive package to dive into immersive VR gaming.
  • Meta Horizon OS: As stated above, the Horizon OS will power the headset. This is designed to deliver seamless MR and VR experiences.
  • More Content: The combination of the above two facets will mean that players of the device will have access to a great deal of content. Firstly with Xbox Game Pass, and secondly with the Meta Horizon Store.

A Strategic Move for Microsoft and Meta

For Microsoft, this partnership represents a significant shift in its approach to VR technology. While the company has previously focused on business applications with its HoloLens technology, the Xbox-branded VR headset signals a new foray into consumer VR gaming. This move aligns with Microsoft’s vision to expand its gaming ecosystem and cater to the growing demand for immersive experiences.

Meta, on the other hand, continues to solidify its position as a leading platform for VR gaming. By collaborating with Xbox, Meta leverages the appeal of the Xbox brand to attract a broader gaming audience, further expanding its reach in the VR space.

The Future of Immersive Gaming

The term ‘metaverse’ became a bit of a dirty word in recent years. While it’s not being used as heavy handedly as it once was, it’s still an evolving concept. Collaborations like this are shaping the future of gaming. The Xbox VR headset is poised to redefine how gamers interact with virtual worlds, offering a blend of affordable high-quality hardware, innovative software, and a vast library of games.

Meta has made no bones about the fact that its Horizon Worlds in which it sees its future. However, the Quest line of headsets has built it foundation in gaming. With an ally like Xbox onboard, the existing gaming audience may find its needs satiated allowing Meta to further invest in its metaverse strategy.

Will there come a time when gaming and metaverse merge into one? Undoubtedly. Will it be soon? Not likely. However, seismic shifts of this nature take time. Bringing more Xbox gaming to VR affords Meta that time.

Xbox VR Headset Launch Date

The Xbox VR headset in collaboration with Meta is more than just a product. It’s a testament to the power of partnerships in driving innovation. As anticipation builds, one thing is clear: the future of gaming is immersive, and Microsoft and Meta are leading the charge.

Gamers and industry observers eagerly await further details on the headset’s pricing, specifications, and release date. Sadly, there are very few details currently available. Meta typically reveals new hardware at its Meta Connect event, which this year is dated for September. Will we see more on the Xbox VR headset at Meta Connect 2025? At this point, fans can only hope.
