Puzzle connoisseurs are well catered to on Meta Quest. There’s an abundance of titles to choose from, from escape rooms like Last Labyrinth and I Expect You to Die through to actual jigsaw games like Puzzling Places. Escape rooms are some of the most popular in the genre, with the latest coming from Mastery VR in the form of Room Escape. But can it make a dent in this space? 131XR’s Room Escape review has all the details.

Another escape room!
As mentioned, Room Escape is going up against some tough competition. One look at the likes of Silent Slayer: Vault of the Vampire and The Room VR: A Dark Matter gives an easy indication of the challenge. Room Escape opts for a classic setting, sending you back to Victorian England circa 1893. As a private detective, you have to search for clues in an old house, trying to piece together a mysterious ten-year-old unsolved case.
Original, this story is not, and as 131XR’s review below finds, Room Escape continues down a rather average path throughout its short runtime.
Room Escape Review
As you’d expect from an escape room game, Room Escape is split into individual rooms to solve. What you’ll find are a collection of intertwined puzzles to solve, mixing both observation and logical thinking. 131XR notes that the puzzles themselves are of a decent and wide variety, offering puzzle fans an engaging experience for the most part. With no timers or impending events, you can enjoy the game at your own leisurely pace. The house has a creepy, old-fashioned vibe, but there are no scary horror elements involved.
However, the review discusses how a range of issues hamper the overall experience. These range from erratic item placement, where they randomly decide to return to point of origin, or not. As well as sound glitches that make the gameplay audibly frustrating. Furthermore, Room Escape might not pack in as much gameplay as you’d like, with only three rooms available. If you’re good at puzzles, you might be out quicker than you think!

Who is Mastery VR?
While VR has many indie developers you might not know by name, Mastery VR has produced several VR games already. The latest is, of course, Room Escape, but other titles in its back catalogue include Chess VR, Rhythm Punch: Body Training – FITNESS on Meta Quest, League of Tabletop Games, Fading Light: Antiworld and Sword Battle. Quite an assortment of titles and genres.
The studio has yet to confirm if Room Escape will be expanded upon and improved with new updates. Or whether the focus has now moved to a brand new title.
