Rogue Pinatas Review

Posted on: 27 Mar 2025

The pinata is a universally recognised item from many Mexican celebrations, and as such, everyone knows what to do to them: give them a big hit with a stick! Nerd Ninjas has taken this fun celebration and given it a VR overhaul in Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon. Recently released for Meta Quest headsets, as you’ll find out in 131XR’s review, Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon has more than just candy inside.

Rogue Pinatas Review

Piñatas-making me crazy!

As you might expect, the premise behind Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon is silly and fun. What starts out as a simple birthday party turns into chaos when angry piñatas rise up and attack in endless swarms. It’s up to you to save the world from these vibrant threats, using all manner of weird a wacky weaponry.

Naturally, your main goal is to smash all these wayward pinatas as fast as possible, racking up points to unlock new goodies. It might seem fairly shallow on the surface, but as you’ll find in 131XR’s review, Nerd Ninjas has done a commendable job adding depth and replayability. Furthermore, Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon is a game that all the family can enjoy, perfect for newcomers and VR veterans alike (just be careful of the TV!).

Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon Review

As seems to be a common thread in modern VR games at the moment, Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon is a roguelike. There are six characters to choose from before heading into the pinata-pocalypse to do battle. Along the way, as you collect those sweet treats, you’ll be able to unlock 20 creative and diabolical weapons and over 18 weird gadgets. These can then be combined for even more carnage.

You’ll encounter plenty of classic pinata-shaped enemies, large and small, as well as an assortment of boss types. Even better, this isn’t a single-player experience, supporting a co-op multiplayer mode. So you and your friends can dive into the action.

As 131XR’s review notes, whether played solo or with a friend, Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon is a lot of fun to play in either mode. Nerd Ninjas has created a game that features one of the hardest gameplay aspects to cultivate: that desire to have ‘one more go’. And if a game can do that, it can’t be half bad.

What’s next for Nerd Ninjas?

This is the first proper VR game from Nerd Ninjas, having cut their teeth on projects like Board Gamelandia for Meta Horizon Worlds and AR titan Pokémon GO in collaboration with Niantic.

Since the launch of Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon, the team has released several patches and gameplay fixes. But it hasn’t yet confirmed a future roadmap regarding new content. Hopefully, the team has some more weird and wonderful ideas planned, adding more chaotic gameplay into the mix for early adopters.

Did Rogue Piñatas VRmageddon catch your eye, but you were put off by the simple gameplay? Or have you already dived right into the colourful smash-em-up? Let us know in the comments below!
