We all love a good pirate game but rarely are they based on real events. However, The Pirate Queen: A Forgotten Legend reveals the true story of the eponymous pirate queen, Cheng Shih. The work of the British developer Singer Studios, step into the 19th-century South China Sea today.
Already a multi-award-winning narrative adventure having been shown at festivals like Tribeca, now it is the public’s turn to see what all the fuss is about.
“The Pirate Queen tells the story of Cheng Shih, the widow of Cheng Yat, leader of the Red Flag pirate fleet who dominated the South China Sea in the 1800s,” the synopsis explains. “When Cheng Yat dies, the Red Flag Fleet is plunged into turmoil as Kwok Po Dai, leader of rival Black Flag pirate fleet, threatens to take over as successor.” Serious business when commanding a fleet of some 70,000 ships!
The Pirate Queen sets sail
You step into the shoes of Cheng Shih – voiced by Lucy Lui – tasked with navigating the treacherous waters and cabins of a moonlit pirate ship. Designed as a rich, immersive storytelling experience, you get to break out of locked rooms, crack complex codes, and creep through winding passages. You’ll need to use your wits to seize control of the fleet, scaling the side of ships and outsmarting adversaries. Don’t forget to visit the crow’s nest and admire beautiful vistas while you’re at it.
Cheng Shih is also helped along the way with clues from her second in command, Cheung Po Tsai. All in her bid to ultimately be crowned the Pirate Queen. The Pirate Queen: A Forgotten Legend is available today for Meta Quest and SteamVR headsets
