When it comes to space-based escapades, we’re far more used to jumping into spaceships or exploring planets. Becoming an actual celestial body is far more unusual, but that’s exactly what you get in Meteora. The brainchild of Big Boot Games, Meteora is an arcade combat racer for PSVR 2. But instead of wheels, you’re a meteor hurtling through space.

Meteora: The Race Against Space Time – to give it its full title – is a game inspired by classic space movies and science documentaries. You’re a meteor trying to survive in a violent, nascent universe, fending off rival meteors en route. But there’s plenty more to see and do including braving supermassive black holes, destroying planets, and even saving the sun.

Big Boot Games’ Meteora is part of Sony’s India Hero Project which includes several other non-VR games.

“Shoot yourself into the nebula and join a race for survival. In this arcade combat racer, you’re not just a meteor but a force of nature,” the studio explains. Cascade your way through a volatile universe of awe and wonder as you outmanoeuvre, pursue, and obliterate rival meteors in a dazzling display of strategy and skill.”

A single-player-only game with online leaderboards, development on Meteora began in 2017. As you’re own ball of cosmic fury, you can unlock, upgrade, and combine power-ups and abilities to help conquer each level. Power-up pick-ups and combine them in real-time rather than heading back to a menu, with over 60 levels to complete.

Meteora doesn’t have a release date just yet. It’ll support flatscreen gaming on PS5 and PC, with added VR support for PSVR 2. The Steam listing shows no VR functionality for PCVR headsets.
