British VR specialist Maze Theory has developed immersive games based on TV shows including Peaky Blinders and Doctor Who. But the studio has never released its own, original project. For years the studio has teased Engram for various headsets including Meta Quest and PSVR 2 but it never surfaced. However, the studio has quietly released The Infinite Inside via Quest’s App Lab instead.
The Infinite Inside is a mixed reality title – a first for the studio – challenging players to solve strange, monolithic puzzles. “Using mixed reality, step from your living room into a dream-like, immersive alternative reality. Here, impossible spaces and abstract geometric architecture challenge your perceptions of what’s possible and impossible,” a synopsis explains.

The Infinite Inside
Combining both mixed and virtual reality, The Infinite Inside weaves a rich narrative to create a story-driven puzzler. Each puzzle towers before you in MR, enabling you to examine it whilst walking around your room. Solving each one will award you with keys to unlock the next step. The story elements then seem to play out in VR, with plenty of virtual scenes shown in the trailer.
While most developers are leaving the original Quest behind, unusually, The Infinite Inside supports every Quest model available. Although, we’d imagine the game is more suited to Quest 3 and Quest Pro for the best MR experience.
The game has arrived in App Lab for good reason, it’s not the final version. It is an early access demo – hence why it’s free – with the official release earmarked for early 2024. So you can test it out in between all those festive Asgard’s Wrath 2 sessions.
