Sporting games have become part and parcel of the VR experience, with golf becoming one of the most popular representations. If you love strolling perfectly manicured fairways trying to improve your handicap in VR then listen on. Because there is a chance you could win tickets to the 152nd Open in 2024 thanks to Golf 5 hosting an official VR Open this month.
In partnership with the R&A, Golf 5 has announced The VR Open at Royal Liverpool. Until the 14th July, you can log into Golf 5 and compete in the qualifying events, all based around the prestigious tournament. Consisting of a set of two one-week qualifier tournaments there are four different entry categories based on a player’s individual Golf 5 handicap.
Compete in the official VR Open
If you’re good enough, the top 20 players from each category qualify as Green Badge Players to compete in the VR Open finals. The finals run from 15th July to 19th August 2023. Qualify and you will also receive a vanity card in the app unlocking a free six-month subscription to The Virtual Open Zone at Hoylake.
Even if you don’t make the cut, any Golf 5 member can compete in the VR Open as a Red Badge Player.
There are some good prizes in store for golf fans who do have the VR skills, however. The overall winner of The 2023 VR Open will receive a trophy and tickets to The 152nd Open in 2024. Winners from the other categories will receive limited edition VR Open memorabilia.
“We have created The VR Open so that fans can engage with the Championship like never before using technology and the Metaverse. This is an important development as we aim to attract new audiences to the sport and the advancement of technology enables us to offer ground-breaking experiences that are unique in golf,” said Neil Armit, Chief Commercial Officer at The R&A. “We look forward to seeing the reaction of fans as the first ever VR Open takes place this summer.”
Golf 5 is available for Meta Quest 2, PICO and PC VR headsets.
