Cowboy Duel VR: Red Wild West Massacre has made it’s debut for PSVR2, bringing gunfights inspired by Wild West duels to VR. The game puts players into a Western setting where quick reflexes and tactical positioning determine success in one-on-one duels. In addition to the PSVR2 launch, a Meta Quest version is also coming soon.
Cowboy Duel VR Gameplay
In Cowboy Duel VR, you’ll assume the role of a gunslinger navigating towns, deserts and saloons while facing off against a range of opponents. Gameplay emphasises timing and accuracy. Duels begin with split-second decisions, and successful shots often depend on calculated movements and use of environmental cover. Those barrels and telegraph poles aren’t just for show.
As you progress through the game you’ll earn in-game currency. You can then spend this money to upgrade weapons, unlock more powerful ammunition. The game offers both story-driven missions and standalone shootouts, with a roster of distinct cowboy characters. As you advance through either mode, the challenges become more demanding. You’ll need faster reactions and sharper tactical decisions. That being said, it should be noted that Cowboy Duel VR definitely sits on the arcade style of gameplay, opposed to being a realistic simulation of gunfighting.
PSVR2 & Meta Quest Details
In addition to its release on PSVR2, Cowboy Duel VR: Red Wild West Massacre is also coming to Meta Quest headsets. The Meta Quest version doesn’t seem to differ from the PSVR2 release. A specific Meta Quest release date has not yet been confirmed publicly, but is currently listed as coming soon on the Meta Store.
The game itself has broader roots beyond VR. Earlier editions of Cowboy Duel: Red Wild West Massacre appeared on flatscreen consoles and handheld systems, including a Nintendo Switch version and PlayStation 4/PlayStation 5 non-VR releases.
Developer Midnight Works
Midnight Works is the studio behind Cowboy Duel VR: Red Wild West Massacre. While Midnight Works is not primarily known as a VR specialist studio, the move into the medium with Cowboy Duel VR is not a lone effort. Several other titles are expected for both PSVR2 and Meta Quest, including the recently revealed BMX City Run VR.
