Since the rebirth of VR all those years ago, the PCVR modding community has thrived. Whether that’s adding simple gaming mechanics or items, or full-blown levels and campaigns. It’s from this community that Labworks Games has emerged, announcing its first official game in the form of Version Control.

What is Version Control?
The studio describes Version Control as an “Experimental Physics Narrative VR Adventure”. This narrative revolves around you becoming a playtester of an unfinished video game, a world where everything and everyone is controlled by the same laws of physics. While this is a single-player adventure, you’re not alone, as you’ll be guided through this virtual world by the game’s developer.
However, that doesn’t mean to say the developer is in control of their creation.
Version Control is a story-driven play space, where each level delivers a different genre, and you have to test mechanics and uncover broken features. That means one moment you could be in a self-aware comedy or conducting corporate training simulations, through to surviving VR combat or even enduring psychological horror.
At the same time, the “developer” is “taking notes, rebuilding, rethinking, and trying to turn this unfinished project into the most “definitive” VR game ever.”
A Brief History
If all this physics talk sounds familiar, then you’ve likely been in VR a while. A multitude of titles have deployed various real-world physics mechanics with Stress Level Zero’s Boneworks and Bonelab, two of the most well-known.
And it’s from Bonelab where the Labworks Games team first got started. They created the Labworks mod for Bonelab, porting the PCVR-only Boneworks onto Quest 2. They then followed that up with the first version of Version Control, a Stanley Parable mod built for BONEJAM in 2024.
This new game is its sequel.
When and Where?
Currently, Version Control is listed as ‘Coming Soon’ on both the Horizon Store and Steam. It’ll support not only PCVR headsets but also most versions of Meta Quest, even Quest 2.
