If you’re an anime fan, then the thought of a VR game based on the iconic Neon Genesis Evangelion series is exciting. Developer Pixelity Inc. has only released narrative details so far, and where the game will fit within the anime’s timeline. But soon, a select group of players will be able to playtest Evangelion: Cross Reflections.

Playtest Details

When conducting most early playtests, studios tend to go with an online approach. It’s easy to roll out, and you get a wide variety of players involved. Pixelity Inc. has opted for an in-person approach instead.

It’ll be running two Focus Group Tests this month, one in Tokyo, Japan and the other somewhere in California. The Japanese test will run from 19th to 21st December 2025. The test in California will only take place on 19th December, with each participant’s session lasting around two hours.

For those interested in participating in the Californian playtest, you have until 9th December to apply – sign up here. Signing up doesn’t mean you’ll be selected, as places will be chosen by a lottery. Those who are selected will have to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), but they’ll also get $150 as a reward.

What is Evangelion: Cross Reflections?

As previously reported, Evangelion: Cross Reflections will be split into a trilogy, covering all 26 episodes of the original anime. The first instalment of the game will cover episodes 1-11, but with a new original character rather than the original protagonist, Shinji Ikari.

“Players will enjoy the story set in the locations from the anime from their own perspective. Battles between Evangelions and Angels, various interactive elements, and engaging captivating storylines with original characters are also planned,” says Pixelity Inc.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of approach the studio goes for. Whether it’ll be a fully fledged game allowing you to pilot the Evangelion. Or more like Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom, leaning heavily into interactive movie territory. We just don’t know at this point.

Launch Info

Currently, we have few details regarding the launch. It is slated for release in 2026, with a public demo expected to go live in the first half of the year. There’s also no word on which platforms it’ll support, although with VR and Mixed Reality features, we’d imagine Meta Quest and possibly Steam Frame as viable options.
