A surprise announcement earlier this summer saw another big name IP heading into VR for the first time. While World War Z as a franchise remains popular – with a second film now in sights – the video game iterations are a different beast. Standing on their own as less story driven an more action-orientated, World War Z on PC and consoles is undoubtedly well loved by many. Can Saber Interactive maintain that reputation in VR? Find out in 131XR’s World War Z VR review.

About World War Z VR

The original PC and console flatscreen versions of World War Z debuted way back in 2019. It’s a co-op action game, not too dissimilar to Left 4 Dead. Players are thrown into maps armed to the teeth, and must work together to overcome the zombie – or Zeke, as they’re known in the World War Z universe – hordes. And hordes they are indeed, as one of the unique selling points of World War Z is the quantity of enemies that appear on-screen at any one time.

World War Z VR aims to replicate this formula, but with some significant reductions in scope and mechanics. It’s a different experience, and certainly a smaller scale. But ultimately, as 131XR’s review below attests, World War Z VR remains a fun game to play. In the end, isn’t that what matters?

World War Z VR Review

So what does World War Z VR do differently? Quite a lot, actually. A lot of little things, and a couple of big things. Chief among them being that the highly acclaimed co-op gameplay is, in fact, entirely absent. Instead, you’re allied with two AI companions.

They’re generally pretty good at covering your back. However, they certainly aren’t here to initiate any tactical advantages. The level design is also far from as expansive and the flatscreen editions, though this isn’t too big a deal. After all, you can easily play a flatscreen game while sat on a couch for hours. In VR? There’s the comfort consideration to take into account.

Zombie shooters in VR are certainly not hard to find. Only in the last few months we’ve had Requisition VR and Zombie Army VR launching on Meta Quest headsets. So where does World War Z VR fit into this spectrum?

Truth be told, World War Z VR is actually one of the simplest zombie shooters released in recent months. But at the same time, it is fun. And sometimes, that’s what really matters. If you’re looking for a co-op experience than Zombie Army VR is the way to go. Want a bit more depth and some light crafting mechanics? Requisition VR it is. But if you’re looking for a straight forward action affair, you could certainly do a lot worse than World War Z VR.
