It was almost two years ago that XRSource reported on former Owlchemy Labs CEO Devin Reimer leaving the studio to form AstroBeam. At the time, Reimer said the studio was going to focus on VR multiplayer. However, the team has now revealed its first game, a single-player, AI-powered title that’s all about having conversations with robots. Called Stellar Cafe, it’s coming to Meta Quest this year.

What is Stellar Cafe

As you might expect from one of the minds behind Job Simulator, Stellar Cafe is going to be a quirky experience. With no menus or controllers in sight, Stellar Cafe is driven by real-time AI conversations and hand-tracked interactions.

“Stellar Cafe is our first step towards big possibilities for how we tell stories and interact in VR using voice input,” said Devin Reimer, CEO and founder of AstroBeam, in a statement. “By combining handcrafted characters with real-time AI conversation, we’re creating interactions that feel natural and real. We’re not using AI to replace creativity, but we’re using it to enable a new form of interactivity through voice.”

Set within a cosmic cafe frequented by robots, you get to sit down and have a chat with the locals. It’s then up to you to uncover their stories, personalities, and help solve their problems. Thanks to the AI large language models, conversations will be unscripted and dynamic. The patrons of Stellar Cafe will remember what you say and respond with understanding and context.

Furthermore, whilst having these conversations, the hand tracking will allow you to play in the environment, have a drink using condiments and more.
