Saber Interactive’s World War Z is a hugely popular co-op zombie shooter on PC and consoles. And now, the studio has announced that World War Z VR is set to shamble onto headsets this summer. What’s more, according to the studio, the masses of undead bodies will make the transition to VR. In all their terrifying glory.

World War Z Brings the Hordes to VR
World War Z VR is a totally-new, first-person, single-player experience. Of course, it’s based on the blockbuster Paramount Pictures film and Saber’s best-selling game franchise. Which, apparently, are enjoyed by over 25 million players around the globe. Launching this summer on Meta Quest and SteamVR, World War Z VR reimagines the intense action of the original flatscreen game with the aim of creating ‘the most immersive VR zombie experience ever’.

Technical Marvel
You’ll be taking on hordes of up to 200 zombies on screen at a time, which is an undeniable technical feat for VR. However, the eagle-eyed readers out there will note that – unlike the flatscreen editions of the game – World War Z VR is single-player only. So, it’s not without compromise.
Developed and published by Saber, this new game has designed from the ground up to capture the series’ legendary scale for VR enthusiasts. Every gameplay mechanic of the original World War Z has been reimagined for VR. You’ll be taking on the on hordes of undead across three unique locations: New York, Tokyo and Marseille.
Additionally, you’ll be customising your challenge to suit your playstyle with a variety of characters, weapons, perks and difficulty settings to choose from. There’s seven playable characters set to be available, and you’ll enter the fray with a ‘pre-selected AI squad’. We’re not entirely sure if this means the co-op element of the game will ultimately be simulated with AI teammates.
World War Z VR Launch Plans
The game is available to pre-order today on the Meta Store and Steam for $19.99 USD / £14.99 GBP / €19.99 EUR. All pre-orders come with the Golden Skin Pack, featuring four exclusive gold weapon skins. The game will launch on 12th August, 2025, across all compatible devices.
World War Z VR will be playable on Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and SteamVR. Steam users can also pre-order a special bundle that includes both the new VR game and the original flatscreen game with a 20% discount. It’s somewhat surprising that there’s no word on a PSVR 2 version at present.
Should the game deliver all that is promised it will undoubtedly be a great technical achievement, particularly on the aging Meta Quest 2 headset. However, we have seen similar promises in the past, so pinch of salt with this one. Do you believe Saber Interactive can deliver the goods? Let us know in the comments below!
