Developer Xocus has launched its highly regarded EXOcars for PlayStation VR2 (PSVR 2). After debuting on Steam in May 2024, the game made its way to Meta Quest headsets. Both of these editions were well received by VR racing game fans. Now, it’s finally reached PlayStation 5, available for PSVR 2 gamers to download now.

What is EXOcars?

EXOcars, as you might have guessed, is a racing game. The unique selling point here though, is the speed.

Many VR racing games have been rather sedate experiences. Taking the recently released Galaxy Kart as an example, it simply doesn’t stand up to the speed of kart racers on traditional flatscreen platforms. This could be due to one of several reasons, chief among them being a different allocation of processing power and player comfort. However, we have seen it is possible to have high speed racing in VR, harking all the way back to Tammeka Games’ Radial-G.

But EXOcars is more than just speed. The game will take you from streets and stadiums to deserts, mountains and a tropical paradise. The track design pays close attention to landscape, surface type, and terrain relief. MotorStorm in VR, maybe?

Ramps, drifts, and natural obstacles; EXOcars is definitely on the chaotic side of racing.

EXOcars Reviews

Since its debut on Steam, EXOcars has garnered a positive reception in the VR gaming community. On Steam, it holds a “Mostly Positive” rating based on 89 user reviews, with 71% expressing approval. Similarly, on the Meta Quest platform, the game boasts a 4.1 out of 5 rating from 102 reviews, indicating a favorable response.

Critics have lauded EXOcars for its immersive racing experience. In particular, highlighting its realistic physics and high-quality graphics. UploadVR commended the game for delivering a “visceral, arcade-y, physics-based experience” that makes players feel like real-life race car drivers.

The game’s diverse track designs, ranging from deserts to forests and shipyards, have been praised for their visual appeal and variety. However, some reviewers have pointed out areas for improvement. For instance, UploadVR noted that while the courses are generally well-designed, some are “blander than others,” and the customisation options, both aesthetic and performance-related, are somewhat limited.

Additionally, Thumb Culture observed that the game’s music might not appeal to everyone, suggesting that the soundtrack felt like a “less successful Avenged Sevenfold album.”

What’s Next for EXOcars?

Despite these critiques, the consensus is that EXOcars offers a compelling and immersive VR racing experience. Xocus are clearly aware of this reception, not only porting to PSVR 2 but also setting expectations for further enhancements in future updates.

In terms of content, we don’t yet know what’s coming down the line. However, Xocus have been focusing on in-game events and updates, regularly hosting online tournaments and quality of life fixes. EXOcars also features cross-platform multiplayer support. You can jump in with your friends today, regardless of which VR headset they own.
