Meta’s latest software update for Meta Quest headsets, v74, brings with it a lot of improvements for user productivity. Gaming, however, is getting only a small amount of attention. Is this reflective of Meta’s shift away from gaming, or simply coincidental in its timing?
Productivity Updates
One of the key features of the Meta Quest v74 update is the way in which the device handles 2D applications. Users can now see minimised apps above the universal menu. This makes it easier to switch between open applications when necessary. For example, you’ll be able to browse the web, watch videos and send messages to friends without leaving your current application.
This feature was previously available as part of Meta’s early rollout, but is now packaged as a feature for all users.
The update also brings expanded functionality for additional user profiles. Through the Meta Horizon mobile app, second or third user accounts on a Meta Quest headset can now access additional features. These include casting and device status monitoring. No more will the primary user be solely responsible for ensuring the headset is charged!
For families sharing a headset, parents can now monitor their children’s VR activities more easily through the mobile app.
Gaming Updates
While gaming is clearly a lesser priority in this update, there are still a number of improvements available in the Meta Quest v74 firmware. Meta Quest 3 owners specifically benefit from this update, with a new feature allowing for the headset to connect directly with an external display via the onboard USB-C port. This provides high-resolution, low-latency output. This is particularly useful for content creation and livestreaming. All current Meta Quest headsets also receive a reported improvement in reliability for wireless casting.
The Meta Quest Link PC app receives a small update. System tray support, which allows quick access to device status and controls, has been improved. Perhaps most importantly however, the update also reduces loading screen transitions between the home environment and immersive applications.

Meta Quest v74 Update Availability
Other minor improvements, such as being able to detect when the user is travelling to recommend enabling Travel Mode and updating the spatial audio for 2D apps such as WhatsApp, are also included. The Meta Quest v74 update has already begun rolling out, but as is often the case with modern technology you may not receive it immediately. The update could take several weeks to reach your headset.
It’s worth noting that this update is only supporting Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S headsets. The original Meta Quest is no longer being supported.
How do you feel about the lower priority for gamers seen in this latest update? Is this part of the shift we’re seeing at Meta, or simply coincidental timing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
