Batman fans rejoice! The caped-crusader is set to make his return to VR in 2024. Camouflaj and Oculus Studios, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics have announced Batman: Arkham Shadow for Meta Quest 3. And there are plenty of good reasons to be excited for Batman: Arkham Shadow in 2024

Batman: Arkham VR 2.0

Batman: Arkham Shadow isn’t the first VR entry for the Dark Knight. If you’ve been a VR gamer for as long as XR Source has, then you’ll remember Rocksteady Studios Batman: Arkham VR from 2016. Released for PSVR followed by PCVR headsets, this was an hour-long experience with action-puzzle gameplay. Beautiful to look at, it still wasn’t a fully-fledged VR game with many considering it a tech demo.

With Batman: Arkham Shadow, fans of the world’s greatest detective should finally get the VR game they’ve been looking for. The team at Camouflaj has said that: “we aim to deliver an authentic new entry in the celebrated Arkham franchise, something that the series’ millions of fans will know is no easy feat.” Going on to say: “From the start, Batman: Arkham Shadow is being crafted to be the ultimate VR game and take full advantage of Meta Quest 3.”

What to expect from Batman: Arkham Shadow

“Evil stalks the streets. Gotham City is in danger. And you’re the only one who can save it.”

From the brief teaser trailer that “evil” seems to be the Ratcatcher, aka Otis Flannegan. Rats can be seen filling the streets of Gotham City, with a brief tease of another character, Dr. Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn. No other gameplay details have been revealed so far, with more information arriving in June as part of the Summer Game Fest 2024.

We do know it’ll feature a new, original storyline and that the game will be a Meta Quest 3 exclusive.

In safe hands at Camouflaj

Camouflaj has been working on Batman: Arkham Shadow for several years now. However, the studio is best known for Marvel’s Iron Man VR, initially released as a PSVR exclusive in 2020. That was a hugely successful title, highly regarded among critics and fans as one of the best superhero games. The studio was then acquired by Meta, seeing Iron Man VR brought to Quest 2 in 2022.

It’s the quality of that game which undoubtedly made Camouflaj the perfect choice for Batman’s return to VR. Hence we are so excited about its upcoming launch in late 2024.

“Leaning into our eight years of dedicated VR game development history has enabled us to not only create a distinctly Arkham-feeling game but done in a way that leverages the immersive magic only VR can provide.”
