The virtual reality (VR) gaming industry was built upon indie developers turning their hand to a new medium. While some of those are now VR veterans, new VR indies are still joining the fold. Fiend Games – aka Gabriel Mittermair – is the latest, unveiling his first VR game: CONFINED: Leaving OKB-134.

What is CONFINED: Leaving OKB-134?

Having graduated from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Hagenberg, Mittermair sought to create his debut title CONFINED: Leaving OKB-134. Inspired by games like Half-Life: Alyx and the Amnesia series, CONFINED is a survival-horror genre set in an abandoned soviet bunker.

“Having finally something to show about what I’ve been working on feels awesome and was well overdue,” said Mittermair. “There are many frustrating and tedious times when working on such a big project all alone, but seeing testers having fun playing gives a lot of strength back.”

CONFINED Gameplay

As you wander around the dimly lit soviet bunker you’ll want to avoid the darkness and loud noises. The best way is to seek safety by reactivating power, lights and machinery. In doing so you’ll have to solve riddles with residues and stories from long-forgotten workers, soldiers and prior survivors. Just remember that you’re probably not alone.

As this is a VR game, Mittermair is ensuring that there are plenty of physics-based interactions. Grab cables to join them together, press buttons to activate areas and pick up documents to uncover more of the story. You get the gist.

CONFINED Launch

Mittermair is designing the survival horror for both flatscreen PC gaming as well as VR. The mechanics are being developed from the ground up to feel intuitive on both systems.

Currently, CONFINED: Leaving OKB-134 is set to be released in the Spring of 2025 on Steam. A demo is slated to arrive soon, showcasing the first 30 minutes of the game. If you want to see more, check out the latest trailer.
