Funcom has announced Metal: Hellsinger VR, a new VR adaptation of the popular FPS game. The acclaimed rhythm shooter, developed by The Outsiders, is being developed for VR from the ground up in collaboration with Lab42 Games.
What is Metal: Hellsinger?
Metal: Hellsinger is an FPS with a unique twist. The game revolves around a heavy metal score. You’ll deal extra damage if your attacks are synchronised to the beat of the music. A meter denoting your rhythmic coherency is core to the gameplay. This can also be maintained by performing other actions, such as dashing and reloading, all to the beat.
Metal: Hellsinger debuted in 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Since then, over three million players have made the Hells fear the beat. Later this year, you will be able to step into the half-demon body of the Unknown. Aim, move, dash, and shoot with complete freedom in VR.
Funcom’s VR Debut
Metal: Hellsinger marks publisher Funcom’s first foray into VR publishing. Any VR long-time enthusiast will be well aware that the efforts of an established team to move into VR marks a landmark moment. However, it is often met with trepidation as the results are not always perfect. Looking at you, Bulletstorm VR.
“Metal: Hellsinger in VR is a match made in heaven, or should I say hell,” said Funcom’s Chief Marketing Officer, Erling Ellingsen. “Even when we were working on the original, we fantasised about how thrilling it would be to play in VR and many fans have been saying the same. Now that fantasy is coming true and there is no doubt: slaying demons to the rhythm of epic metal tracks, all in full-motion immersive VR, is just as incredible as we imagined it.”
Metal: Hellsinger VR Release Date & Platforms
Later this year, you’ll be staring down the hordes of Hell face-to-face. You mission is to exact vengeance on the Red Judge, ruler of the Hells, as you play through the full campaign of the original game.
Metal: Hellsinger VR also includes the game’s original score. Artists such as Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Matt Heafy (Trivium), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), and more appear within.
Set for release later this year, Metal: Hellsinger VR is coming to Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro, PSVR 2, and PC VR. Are you excited for some heavy metal VR action? Let us know in the comments below!
