When it comes to 90s’ puzzle classics, Cyan Worlds’ Myst (1993) and sequel Riven (1997) are at the top of that list. The former had a VR remake a few years ago and will soon be its successor’s turn. Cyan has confirmed that a Riven remake is set to arrive in 2024.
The remake is being made for flatscreen and VR platforms, although the headsets have yet to be confirmed. But considering Riven’s Steam page lists ‘VR Supported’, PCVR devices are certain. Cyan says it’ll be: “a meticulous, from-the-ground-up remake of the historic puzzle adventure game.”
Being rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5, Cyan Worlds aims to “recreate and expand on its vision for Riven with development focused on delivering native experiences on both flatscreen and VR platforms. The game will offer an unparalleled level of immersion, allowing players to truly feel part of the enigmatic D’ni Empire while exploring the decaying age of Riven.”
Remaking Riven
The remake of Myst was well received, with the Meta Quest edition benefiting from updates including hand tracking.
Riven will feature: “new puzzles, expanded storylines, and breathtaking visuals, even those who know the original by heart will find themselves lost again in its depths. Cyan Worlds is dedicated to ensuring that every player’s experience is unique and memorable, whether longtime fans or newcomers to the series.”
Just like the Myst reboot, the Riven remake will offer free movement through a real-time 3D environment for the first time. Further details regarding its VR mechanics have yet to be unveiled. However, Cyan Worlds is well-versed in VR having also created Obduction (2016) and Firmament (2023).
As there’s no release date for the Riven remake, at the moment. So you’ll have to make do with this new trailer.
