Meta’s Quest 2 virtual reality (VR) headset has become the top dog in the industry – although PSVR2 may unravel that. Because of that, it is the go-to device for VR developers and therefore has some awesome titles on the way. With a great deal in development, here are our most exciting VR games to look forward to.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus
Ubisoft has been culling projects of late including Splinter Cell VR. However, one title that has (so far) avoided the cutting block is Assassin’s Creed Nexus. Originally revealed during the Meta Connect event two years ago, very little has been revealed by Ubisoft officially.
Unofficially, several leaks suggest that characters including Ezio, Cassandra, Connor, and Haytham will be playable. Not in an open-world setting as is traditionally expected from a Creed game, but instead, as linear, 20-minute missions. However, Assassin’s Creed Nexus is still expected to feature all the sneaking, climbing and fighting mechanics players know and love.
Behemoth
From SkyDance Interactive – the team behind The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners: Chapter 2 – comes the studios’ next major project, Behemoth. This is a survival monster slayer of epic proportions, where players must take on towering, colossal giants as they fight through a nightmarish world.
Physics-based swordplay is the main mechanic in Behemoth, so players will have to balance attacks with blocks and parries. No gameplay has been shown just yet, but a cinematic trailer has painted a tasty picture of what is to come. Behemoth is currently slated for a 2023 release.
Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord
Another major franchise coming to Meta Quest 2 is Ghostbusters. VR veterans nDreams (Fracked, Phantom: Covert Ops) are behind Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord creation. Featuring its own unique storyline within the Ghostbusters universe, the videogame will be set in San Francisco, where players have to build a new headquarters.
Naturally, they’ll have to go out and bust some ghosts, either on their own or with friends. The narrative will include an over-arching mystery to solve whilst hunting various ethereal creatures using some classic Ghostbusters tech. Anther title expected in 2023.
Gambit!
Next on the list is Gambit! by Xreal Games. This is a 4-player, co-op shooter with a slated 20-hour campaign to blast your way through. In this pre-apocalyptic world, you can choose from one of four characters, Cody, Frank, Kevin, or Udo, gear up with traditional weapons – or the more unusual dev creations – and head on out.
Xreal Games has indicated that levels will include plenty of climbing and parkour locomotion in addition to all the action sequences. A PvP tournament mode will also be available when Gambit! arrives this year.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Announced by Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2021, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a bit of an unknown at the moment. Apart from that initial reveal, Zuckerberg has said players will be able to experience the game in “a new way”. Additionally, all that’s known is that Video Games Deluxe – the studio behind the LA Noire: The VR Case Files port – is working on the game.
Hopefully, this will be the year Meta unveils some concrete details.
Hellsweeper VR
Mixed Realms’ first VR title Sairento VR established itself as a videogame unafraid of pushing locomotion boundaries in VR. And that looks to continue in the studios’ next project, Hellsweeper VR. Action-packed, with ranged and melee weapons, and magic to dispatch hordes of monsters, Hellsweeper VR looks to be an unrelenting experience for VR veterans.
Supporting single-player and co-op modes, Hellsweeper VR combines all that weaponry with wall-running, power-sliding, backflips, bullet-time and loads more. A PC VR release is slated for 2023, with the Meta Quest 2 version still without a release window.
Peaky Blinders: The Kings Ransom
Another game showcasing the powerful draw VR has, British studio Maze Theory is working on Peaky Blinders VR: The Kings Ransom. Based in the world of the TV show but with its own storyline, players will join the infamous Birmingham gang from the 1920s.
Fans of the show will be glad to hear this is an officially endorsed production. Actors Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson will voice their characters whilst locations have been accurately reproduced.
Peaky Blinders: The Kings Ransom has an official release date, 9th March 2023.
EVERSLAUGHT Invasion
EVERSLAUGHT for PC VR is known for its exciting combat and lush visual style. Developer MobX in collaboration with Fast Travel Games plans to port the title to Quest 2, slightly renaming it EVERSLAUGHT Invasion.
Offering single and co-op gameplay, EVERSLAUGHT Invasion is a classic dungeon crawler. All about defeating hordes of monsters, finding new weapons and levelling up your character to delve ever deeper.
Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable
If you’re not into anime, then you might not have heard of Attack on Titan. A series where humans have to continuously fight monstrous human-like titans, there’s extraordinarily little to go on currently.
What we do know is that it’s coming to Quest 2 in the summer of 2023.
