The original PlayStation VR launched back in 2016, compatible with PlayStation 4 (PS4) consoles. The device was well received, with many citing it as a close rival to the quality of PC VR of the time. Upon the launch of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) however, many wondered how the PlayStation VR would work with the new system. Especially given that PSVR 2 is not backwards compatible with PlayStation VR software. If you’re wondering, here’s a guide for how to play PlayStation VR games on PS5.
It’s worth reiterating the difference between PlayStation VR and PSVR 2 before we dive in. The original PlayStation 4 was made for PS4, but is compatible with PS5. The PSVR 2 is only compatible with PS5. Furthermore, PlayStation VR games will only play on the original headset, and PSVR 2 games will only play on the PSVR 2. There is no cross-compatibility for PlayStation VR and PSVR 2 games.
How to Play PlayStation VR Games on PS5
Will the PlayStation VR work with the PS5?
In order to play PlayStation VR games on PS5, you’ll need the following equipment:
- PlayStation 5 console
- PlayStation VR headset
- PlayStation Camera for PS4
- DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller
- PlayStation Camera Adaptor
That final point – the PlayStation Camera Adapter – is crucial. The new HD camera for PS5 is not compatible with PlayStation VR, and the original PlayStation Camera does not connect directly with the PS5, and the adapter is required. You can request your adapter free of charge via playstation.com/camera-adaptor. You will need your PlayStation VR serial number, found on the rear of the device’s Processor Unit.
There are additionally a few optional accessories. These may be required by certain games, and are compatible with the PS5 providing the above requirements are satisfied.
- PS Move Controllers
- Aim Controller
What PS4 VR Games Work on PS5?
At this point in time, there is just one PSVR game that is known to be incompatible with PS5. Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey will not work on PS5, regardless of which VR headset you own. It’s not known why this is the case. Thankfully, it’s the only known exception to the rule of PS4 VR games being backwards compatible with the PS5 console.
However, once again we should mention that other PlayStation VR games that work on PS5 will still need the original PlayStation VR headset, and will not work with the PSVR 2.
