In May, VR fans were treated to a slew of new videogame announcements. This was thanks to PSVR 2 at PlayStation Showcase and the Quest Gaming Showcase. Prominent virtual reality studio Vertigo Games had a couple of games to share, the big surprise being Arizona Sunshine 2. We’re certainly excited for the sequel so here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming game.
It would be an easy bet that almost any VR fan who’s had a headset for more than two years has played Arizona Sunshine. One of the biggest VR titles of 2016, its blend of zombie shooting action has made it a stalwart in many a gaming library. But it did need an update, and thankfully its sequel looks to be heading in the right direction.
While the original had physicality to it – manual reloading, picking stuff up – you couldn’t get too experimental with your kills. Games like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners changed all of that, allowing for brutal encounters where you could try new tools and weapons. As demonstrated in the Arizona Sunshine 2 trailer, Vertigo Games will unleash a “next-gen mutilation and gore system” making for a far more visceral experience.
You’ll still have online co-op gameplay if a mate wants to join you but you now have another companion in tow. Cliche it might be, but most lone wanderers in a post-apocalyptic world have a four-legged companion. Buddy is his name and he’ll stick with you through thick and thin, helping take down the pesky undead – which the studio has started calling Fred.
A narrative hasn’t been revealed just yet. Other than you and Buddy roaming the wilds of Arizona with a shotgun and a can-do attitude.

The surprise reveal took place during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase on 24th May 2023.

Is Arizona Sunshine still good?
One of the original and best zombie VR games, Arizona Sunshine is looking a little old now. Having been released in 2016, VR has made great strides in immersive gameplay which we’re expecting the sequel to benefit from. Even so, Arizona Sunshine can be generally picked up quite cheaply as it always features in sales. If you’re a zombie fan then it is still fun to play.

Vertigo Games hasn’t given a specific release date yet, just that Arizona Sunshine 2 will arrive in 2023.

It’ll support Meta Quest 2 & Quest Pro, PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR 2) and PC VR headsets.
