The Quest Gaming Showcase Put Sony’s to Shame

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) kicked off the summer season of videogame showcases with what many described as a rather muted event. The PSVR 2 PlayStation Showcase had some good titles like the Resident Evil 4 Remake trailer but lacked that certain pop needed to get fans truly excited. The Quest Gaming Showcase, on the other hand, was far more electric. Albeit somewhat helped by the surprise Quest 3 announcement.

Quest 3 might have stolen the show before it had even begun but VR fans were treated to a bevvy of announcements. The big one was most certainly Asgard’s Wrath 2 from Sanzaru Games. Continuing the story from the Oculus Rift original, this sequel promises one of the biggest adventures yet on the Quest platform. You’re pursuing Loki across time and space, with epic battles to wage, vast environment’s like the Great Sand Sea to cross and lost treasures to find. It is an “expansive and immersive RPG packed with over 60 hours of cinematic storytelling, exploration, and tense combat,” Meta notes. Asgard’s Wrath 2 is currently slated for a Winter 2023 release.

A waterfall of surprise VR games

Asgard’s Wrath 2 was previously hinted at, what wasn’t were these following titles. Firstly, Sega makes its first step onto Quest this year with Samba de Amigo. An arcade classic from 1999, it eventually made its way to Sega Dreamcast a year later. Now, over 20 years later the rhythm action game is making a comeback.

Secondly, Schell Games had a new title to unveil, Silent Slayer: Vault of the Vampire. This single-player horror game requires stealth to survive, as you have to deal with hungry vampires. The studio also had a new trailer to share for its popular spy franchise I Expect You To Die 3: Cog in the Machine.

Other new games included:

VR updates

Phew! And the games don’t stop there! Thankfully, several of the Quest Gaming Showcase games XR Source hoped would appear actually did.

Sony Pictures VR and nDreams’ Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord made an appearance. A new trailer revealed more of the original story: “Gustav Hookfaber—once a promising young scientist, now a supervillain driven to unleash the true potential of untapped spectral energy.” We can’t wait to bust some ghosts. Furthermore, another title we were hoping to see at the PlayStation event that was nabbed by Meta was Tender Claws’ Stranger Things VR. Fans were treated to more Vecna gameplay. You can now pre-order the game ahead of its Autumn launch.

Then the one title we thought would be an absolute long shot, Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR gave us a little wave. More details are going to be shared during Ubisoft Forward on 12th June. Even so, another titillating addition.

Lastly, let’s not forget to mention Arizona Sunshine 2. The PlayStation Showcase got the exclusive reveal so it repeated the same trailer.

The Quest Gaming Showcase roundup

All in all, there was plenty to take away from the showcase. Plus there were smaller updates and additions we’ve not mentioned. Evoking a stance that was far more celebratory of VR than Sony’s “here are some games…”, Meta definitely seemed to know its audience and what we craved. And that was lots of exciting content.

Best of all, all of these games will support Quest 2, Quest Pro and Quest 3 when it arrives.

Personally, I think it delivered. What were your impressions, do you disagree? Let us know in the comments below.
