In May, Microids and Virtuallyz Gaming announced the return of TAITO’s ’80s cult classic Operation Wolf, but this time in VR form. Originally scheduled for a multiplatform 22nd June launch, that date has now been pushed back by several weeks.
Called Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission VR (very catchy), it’ll now arrive for Meta Quest 2, PSVR 2, Pico 4 and Steam VR headsets on 13th July 2023. Virtuallyz Gaming notes it’ll: “remain faithful to the spirit of the original game, while premiering a new artistic direction.”
Operation Wolf Returns this summer
If you’re not old enough to remember Operation Wolf, it was full of side-scrolling rail-shooting action. One of the first to do so, Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission VR brings all the ’80s mayhem into VR.
A single-player experience, the campaign narrative is pulled right out of movie classics like Rambo and Commando. “Play as a special agent fighting a new criminal organization. In addition to arms and drug trafficking, the organization, led by the mysterious General Viper, has developed a powerful new weapon,” the synopsis explains. “After discovering several of its bases, you will be sent to dismantle the organization, destroy the weapon and free the hostages held captive in surrounding camps.”
In reality, all you need to worry about is how quickly you blow stuff up. The campaign features six levels and plenty of guns (SMG, Shotgun, Grenade Launcher etc.) to have fun with. Plus, once that’s all over there’s a survival mode to test your endurance against waves of enemies.
There will also be a non-VR version of Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission arriving Fall 2023. It’ll support PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X|S and One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
