Whether it’s TV shows like Upload or movies such as Ready Player One, we do love it when the worlds of entertainment and VR combine. The next one that should be on your radar is Battle Islands’ animation Ghosts of Ruin. A series where VR has advanced to a stage where headsets are no longer needed.
Set in a gritty dystopian world where players can now feel the games they play, the cast features some stars. Variety reports that Rosario Dawson (The Mandalorian) will voice Prism. A character described as a standoffish pro gamer with aspirations of becoming the world champion. She’ll be joined by Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) who will voice series protagonist Lee.
Ghosts of Ruin Plot
“In the near-future tech dystopia of San Francisco, ‘Ghosts of Ruin’ is a genre-bending animated series where virtual reality has evolved into Neural Reality, creating a world where video games have been synced directly into players’ minds and are indistinguishable from real life,” explains the synopsis. “The series follows a group of gamers on their journey into the world’s first neural reality battle royal tournament game called ‘Ruin.’ However, a rogue program emerges to turn their paradise into a living nightmare.”
Ghosts of Ruin will make its debut via the Gala Film website this August. This is a division of the Web3 company Gala Games. Therefore, it has been running an NFT sale where holders will get exclusive access amongst other perks. The basic tier gives holders access to the show and exclusive content. The highest – and sold-out – tier allowed owners to be directly involved in the show as a character or contributor.
“Rosario Dawson and Tony Revolori are such talented creatives and their dynamic performances will bring depth and authenticity to the complex characters of our dystopian sci-fi-world,” said Ghosts of Ruin showrunner Michael Ryan in a statement. “Partnering with Gala Film and Hans Zimmer’s Bleeding Fingers Music, Ghosts of Ruin will truly be a unique and immersive experience that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats as the series explores the insidious intrigue of a near-future world.”
Battle Islands’ animation Ghosts of Ruin will also come to most major streaming platforms at a later date.
