At the beginning of the month, XREAL Games – the team behind Zero Caliber – announced the next in its VR series, Zero Caliber: Frostbite. At the time, the studio also teased that another game was in the pipeline. And now we know what that is, a hardcore tactical shooter called COVR.

Zero Caliber: Frostbite

What is COVR?

While the Zero Caliber series has always sat between realism and arcade gameplay, COVR will not. As XREAL Games explains in its announcement: “COVR is built around full realism, deliberate pacing, and consequence-driven gameplay.”

COVR will be a high-stakes extraction shooter offering both single-player and co-op multiplayer modes. The idea is that players will plan an approach, clear whatever structure they face, execute the mission briefing and get out, hopefully. The game will feature close-quarters combat, freedom to approach buildings however you see fit, with multiple entry points, and realistic weapon handling.

Furthermore, to ensure variety and replayability, the maps will alter so no two runs are the same. The studio does mention that COVR will feature ‘dynamic enemies’, suggesting they’ll adapt to the environment rather than merely stand there shooting at you.

Register Today

Just as with Zero Caliber: Frostbite, XREAL Games has opened up playtest registrations for COVR. There’s no indication as to when these playtests will begin or what platforms they’ll support. But the form does list the three major VR platforms, Meta Quest, SteamVR and PSVR 2.

2026 Double Wammy

It’s quite unusual for a VR developer to announce not one, but two major projects. Especially as both Zero Caliber: Frostbite and COVR are both due for release in 2026. If that is the case, it’s likely that both will be Early Access releases, developing the game alongside the community.

Even so, that’s still an impressive feat even for an accomplished studio like XREAL Games.
