Calling all ornithologists, Buffalo Buffalo’s Birdseed VR is preparing to leave the nest next month. After an initial Early Access period that began in 2025, the developer had initially planned a 1.0 launch for March. Now the studio has confirmed an April release date for Birdseed VR, adding new and improved features.

It’s all about the birds

While the name may inspire ideas of feeding various birds in virtual parks, in actual fact is more ornithological. The idea is to head out into the wilds and photograph the various birds you encounter.

You can explore the environment, listening out for birdsong and then using the in-game camera to photograph each species in your journal. Designed as a calm, cosy experience, Birdseed VR added multiplayer support during Early Access, allowing up to four players to go virtual bird watching.

Birdseed VR 1.0

With the impending release of the 1.0 version, Birdseed VR players will be able to enjoy lots of new and refined mechanics.

One of the biggest additions will be the Scoutn Store. Here you’ll be able to purchase a variety of new lens skins, camera charms, polaroid frames, and more. You’ll also be able to unlock the new Super and Ultra Telephoto lenses, ideal for capturing all the new birds found in Field Guides 3-5.

Adding further realism to the experience, the birds will be able to peck, perch, poop and even fall asleep. This natural behaviour will also extend to following flight paths based on real-life bird patterns.

Launch Details

Birdseed VR is now scheduled for its official launch on Meta Quest 3/3S – no Quest 2 unfortunately – on 30th April 2026. Furthermore, Buffalo Buffalo has confirmed a SteamVR version is in the works, with a launch planned for later this year.
