Escape room games are fairly prolific in VR, as this pick of the best will testify. But that doesn’t mean to say there’s no space for more. Coming soon to Meta Quest and SteamVR is Amelia’s Escape, and our buddies at 131XR have got a special early preview of the game.

An Escape Room within An Escape Room
Real-life escape rooms ballooned pre-covid, offering players delightfully intricate puzzles to solve with friends. With the industry getting back on its feet, in VR, virtual escape rooms grew in popularity as they could provide the same level of interactive difficulty while offering far more fantastical settings.
One of the biggest differences between virtual and real-world escape rooms is that of assistance. Video game tropes naturally lend themselves to helping players who get stuck, with useful hints. In real life, hints and tips are far harder to come by. In the middle of this is where Amelia’s Escape sits. A virtual escape room that keeps its hands firmly in its pockets.
Amelia’s Escape Preview
As the name implies, in Amelia’s Escape, you take on the role of the titular character, who’s been kidnapped and locked up. Finding yourself within a strange building, your only task is to, of course, escape.
131XR’s preview of Amelia’s Escape comes from the upcoming Steam Next Fest demo of the game. Presented with a large, expansive room, you have to solve a series of puzzles to unlock a door in the centre. The first steps are fairly simple, presented with an easily distinguished light manipulation puzzle. However, things get dramatically more complicated thereafter, as none of the other puzzles are clearly marked or laid out.
This is an escape room for those who love a complicated puzzle. You have to investigate every corner, pick up every item, and decipher what is relevant and what is not. So there’s plenty of trial and error involved for those who enjoy it.
As Amelia’s Escape is still in development, 131XR discovered several interaction issues that still need to be resolved. Yet the potential is definitely there.
