Way before games like Demeo made tabletop gaming in VR popular, there was Tabletop Simulator. Originally released in 2015, developer Berserk Games introduced VR support early on, allowing gamers to play various board games. Now, in 2026, the team has announced a series of major updates, effectively calling them Tabletop Simulator 2.0.

What is Tabletop Simulator?

As the name suggests, Tabletop Simulator focuses on digitising board games. Originally starting with 15 classic games like Chess and Checkers, over the past 10 years, the game has massively expanded thanks to community-created mods.

In this online sandbox, you can create your own games to play with friends, or download some of the latest DLC packs, which have introduced games like Zombicide, Cosmic Encounter Connector and Pillars of Eternity: Lords of the Eastern Reach, to name a few.

The Tabletop Simulator 2.0 overhaul is set to drastically improve the overall experience. The core focus will be the UI/UX overhaul, which the team says will rework “the fundamentals of how you play, learn, and build in Tabletop Simulator.”

And that’s just the start. Berserk Games is promising better performance and improved visuals, new and improved creator tools to help bring your ideas to life faster. The multiplayer will be made more reliable, ensuring greater stability and security. And finally, a complete reworking of the VR support. This will see the introduction of OpenXR support, as well as making the VR interactions more fluid and the interfaces more VR-friendly.

2.0 Roadmap

So when are these updates likely to occur? The studio hasn’t given a definitive time as to when it plans on rolling each update out, but it has listed them in order. They are as follows:

  1. Stable & Secure Online Play
  2. Performance & Hardening Improvements
  3. New Interface & Experience Overhaul (Play Mode / Edit Mode)
  4. Modern Control Scheme & Controller Support Improvements
  5. Visuals & Performance Improvements
  6. VR Rework — Modern VR Foundation & Better VR UI
  7. Steam Deck / Steam Frame / Steam Machine Polish Pass
  8. Creator Marketplace

So it might be a little while until we see the VR improvements, but by then, all the major updates will have been released. Furthermore, because these are updates, they’re entirely free for all Tabletop Simulator owners.
