VR offers some of the best mech fighting games around, sitting you in the cockpit of giant war machines. Iron Rebellion has been delivering the goods since 2021 on Meta Quest (2024 on Steam). And now its upgraded things even further with its Foundations Update.

Iron Rebellion Update
Finishing 2025 with a bang, the Iron Rebellion Foundations Update adds a new map, new gameplay modes, and a revamp of its AI systems in what Black Beach Studio calls “a meaningful step toward the next phase of the game’s development”.
The latest official map to be introduced is Abandoned Sector 9, originally created by community Discord member, Kforce. The studio took Kforce’s design and gave it a massive upgrade to match Iron Rebellion’s new visual direction. Stating the level offers “the highest-quality, highest-fidelity environment ever produced for the game”, players will be able to fight through flooded alleyways, fractured overpasses, and broken megastructures.
As for the new game modes, there’s Death Match and Gun Game. Providing a broader range of gameplay beyond the main team-based PvP mode, these have been intoduced to make Iron Rebellion more accessible.
As for that AI overhaul, Black Beach Studio has introduced: “new behavior profiles, adaptive threat response, and moment-to-moment context awareness, AI units now support more reactive, varied, and engaging encounters across every existing mode”.
The Future of Iron Rebellion
After several years of being one of the leading mech games in VR, Black Beach Studio has no plans on slowing down. As mentioned, this ‘Foundations Update’ is laying the groundwork for an even more varied experience.
“This update moves us one step closer to the types of experiences we want to build,” said Justin Spice, Founder of Black Beach Studio in a statement. “The new AI opens up design space we didn’t have before, and Sector 9 shows where we’re taking the world visually. There’s a lot ahead, and this update is an important part of getting there.”
Black Beach Studio is keen to expand Iron Rebellion’s PvE direction whilst remaining focused on future cooperative experiences.
Mecha VR Carnage
Iron Rebellion is a multiplayer only game for Meta Quest and SteamVR headsets. That can come with its own issues as multiplayer titles vye for the finite numbers of players in VR. Even so, that doesn’t seem to have hampered Iron Rebellion, because as our buddies at 131XR discovered in their review the game is perfectly tailored to VR.
