It’s always fun when developers look to try something different in an established genre. Tower defence games like The Smurfs – Flower Defense have taken a more traditional approach, while War of Wizards tries a different tactic. The latest edition to arrive from Arcane Miracle Entertainment is War of Wizards: Apprentice Edition, and as 131XR recommends in its review, this is worth a look.
More Warring Wizards
Described as both an arena battler and tower defence game, War of Wizards: Apprentice Edition skirts the line between both, while adding in some gesture-based magic for good measure. You are a wizard, and the goal is to defeat other wizards in a magical duel of sorts.
Standing at either end of a long arena, you cast spells by drawing patterns in the air, summoning troops and unleashing spells at your opponent and their army. Naturally, to win, you need to kill the opposing wizard, simple.
War of the Wizards Review
That might not exactly sound like tower defence gameplay, but the way matches play out is similar to chess. You have to carefully choose your spells (pieces) and cast them at the most opportune moment. This is made all the more difficult because the more complex spells take longer to draw, leaving you open to attack. With over 80 spells to choose from, that’s quite a lot to master.
As 131XR finds in its review of War of Wizards, this creates dynamic gameplay as you fend off attacks and unleash your own. Spells require mana, and while this does restore slowly, the best way to speed up the process is to shoot at your opponent. Thus forcing you to switch strategy every so often.
Furthermore, War of Wizards: Apprentice Edition supports both solo and multiplayer gameplay modes. Fight against AI to practice those spells and then face off against others in 1v1 or 2v2 matches.
Most importantly, War of Wizards: Apprentice Edition is free, giving you a great reason to jump right in.
Which Wizard to Choose!
As mentioned, War of Wizards: Apprentice Edition is free, so what’s the difference between it and the previous game. War of Wizards: Apprentice Edition is actually an extension of sorts to 2024’s War of Wizards. And what 131XR found is that the difference seems to be content access (spells to be precise).
As War of Wizards: Apprentice Edition is free, you have access to a small number of introductory spells and the early part of the game. To unlock more, you either have to collect in-game coins by playing a lot or spend some actual money. Whereas War of Wizards requires an initial upfront purchase, giving you access to far more content. Additional spells can be unlocked as normal through gameplay progression.
